“In Las Vegas I did what I said I would.”
“First, I beat Flop.”
“Actually, I did more than that.”
“I exposed Flop. And not in the sense that he isn’t talented. He is.”
“No, I exposed Flop by calling him out and forcing him to admit what he’d done.”
“You all saw his confession before our match. Flop tried to justify himself; the claimed the life of Norb Smalley didn’t matter because he wasn’t human, and how killing Norb gave him Great Power- which, hey, if that’s the case maybe you should have used it in our match, Flop; you might have won - the point is I confronted Flop and got him to reveal who he was to the world.”
“Just by telling the truth.”
“Why does this matter? This is wrestling; not psycho-therapy."
"I bring it up because one of my opponents for Timebomb sees himself as quite the head-shrinker.”
“CJ Phoenix.”
“CJ Phoenix, like Flop, is another fraud. Except Phoenix’s act is talking a lot while saying nothing.”
“He’s after the Cruiserweight Title not because he wants it. He really doesn’t need it, see? No, CJ’s motive for keeping the title from us is that he wants to protect us. Why? He claims greed, which makes no sense. I mean, when you deny someone something you don’t take away that initial desire. It’s nonsense reasoning.”
“Unless the belt is legit cursed so it corrupts whoever touches it like the Ring of Sauron; and if that’s true take it up with Torture and Gravedigger. They can throw the old one into Mount Rainier and commission a replacement.”
“If it seems like I’m not taking your screed seriously CJ it’s because I’m not. I don’t buy your condescending rationale for wanting to be Cruiserweight Champion any more I do your mission to teach us despair.”
“Don’t get me wrong; you probably know a lot about angst. You likely suffer a strong feeling of intellectual inadequacy that compels you to spout gibberish that dumb people think is profound. But we all despair for different reasons and grieve in our own ways. The lessons you’re offering are trite and insulting.”
“But hey, they were enough for The Following to recruit you. You’ve managed to hoodwink those Robert Bly knock-offs into thinking your community college washout level treatises on human nature have merit.”
“To me though; the only thing you are good for is serving as a stepping stone for my rise.”
“You’re Aalewis without the fedora, and when I pin you, in that moment I’ll be euphoric.”
“I don’t need you to protect me from the title I joined Action Wrestling to win, CJ. I’m a grown woman who knows her own mind. And, believe me, you don’t have what it takes, physically or intellectually to educate me about despair.”
“So, CJ? Shove your Trap Cards because when it comes to you and me I’m not playing.”
“You’re not the only person in this match, though. Tsukiko is too; and her game I do respect.”
“I didn’t before, Tsukiko, and I apologize. I thought you were holding yourself back by using Ryan Logan as a proxy mouthpiece for your repressed rage. I was wrong.”
“You proved it by beating me and an actually motivated Masuda Teijin. And you did it your way, with your friend by your side and a smile on your face.”
“By talking down your mental toughness, I pulled a ‘CJ Phoenix’: saying crap I didn’t know anything about.”
“At Timebomb when we face I will know my enemy: a warrior at peace with herself.”
“Armed with that understanding, I can now beat you.”
“Just like I beat another fighter whose self-awareness is unshakeable and whose technical ability is greater than mine.”
“Sure, the Plexhibition against Trey Bouchet wasn’t a match but it had stakes beyond a picture and a Raising Cane's gift card.”
“It was a test to see if I could figure out a problem and use my hustle to overcome it.”
“I passed.”
“Same thing will happen Sunday, Tsukiko, when I pass you, pass Phoenix, and move on to become the Number One Contender for the Cruiserweight Title.”
“Watch.”
