Pas De Trois
[There is a montage of a young woman wrestling various matches. Her offense is theatrical; kicks are punctuated by a rebel yell; hits taken are sold with a banshee’s wail. The highspots are overly flamboyant, though the small crowds watching clearly grok her schtick.]
[Jenna Bauer’s voiceover]: Action has signed several new wrestlers since the start of 2021 One is Minka Starr, who will be debuting on CruiserClash next week. We sat down with Miss Starr earlier to discuss her ignominious past, her reasons for wrestling, and her goals for the future.
[The segment transitions to Jenna seated in a director’s chair opposite the young woman from the hype package. While Jenna’s all business in her blue and gold Action Wrestling blazer and matching pencil skirt, her interview subject has made the choice to go cas: an off the shoulder slate grey sweater and distressed skinny jeans.]
You were something of an alternative media celebrity before becoming a wrestler. Did that prepare you for your current career?
Maybe? [laughs] I got deservedly dragged for my clout chasing. I like to think that’s given me thicker skin, though I guess we’ll see.
Are you expecting a lot of criticism while part of Action Wrestling?
Sure. Nature of the beast, right?
Some do argue you became a wrestler after all your other attempts at fame failed.
Yeah. There’s some truth to it. I wasn’t a fan as a kid. I wasn’t someone who fought; before that One Time I never had made a fist in anger.
By ‘One Time’ you mean the incident on ‘Preteen Beauty Queens’?
Mmhmm. I’m guessing you’ll show the clip now?
[She guesses right. There’s an edit, and the recording that first brought Minka to the public’s attention is played. Shaky handcam footage of her younger self savagely brawling with a bigger adult. She more than holds her own, bloodying the woman’s nose and ripping out a handful of her hair before being restrained by members of the show’s staff. When the footage ends there’s a close-up of Minka in the present day. She’s smiling self-consciously.]
My notorious debut. Embarrassing now; haven’t watched it in years. I don’t regret standing up to her, but I let my emotions get the better of me and took it too far. I apologized to her, you know?
Was that before or after your rematch on ‘Celebrity Boxing’?
[The ingenue shifts in her chair, the foot of her crossed leg bouncing with nervous energy as its checkerboard slip-on waggles back and forth.]
Before. Aheh, you’re not going to show highlights from that, are you?
No.
Thanks. That’s a career low point for me, which says a lot. But to circle back to your original question; yes, my attempts at stardom failed, but those who think I became a wrestler just for that are underestimating my drive. I didn’t spend three years training and a year competing in the minors because I thought this would be an easy way to get my name out there. The plan isn’t to compete for a couple months, leverage that notoriety to an appearance on ‘The Bachelor’, and dip out. When it comes to wrestling in general and Action Wrestling in particular, I’m all-in.
Thoughts on your CruiserClash debut?
It’s a three-way dance with two partners looking to re-establish themselves. I can relate, obviously. Alex Scott is a former Tag Champion. Soldado Fortuna was a credible contender for the CruiserClash Title before his concussion. They both have been at or near the pinnacle. Now they’re opening the show against the new girl who just might have been hired because of Donald Deruty’s love of showtoons.
I didn’t know that about him.
Joke, Jenna; but doesn’t Deruty look the type? I could just picture him belting out some old standard. Anyways: this match is set up for me to be the slump buster for two guys who desperately need a win. Only I’m not one to blindly accept direction. Both Scott and Soldado are going to have to wait another week to get off the shneid; because I’m winning our match. Action Wrestling: Minka Starr is here.
Watch her rise.
