“Why?”
Everyone knows I’m the kind of guy who keeps himself to himself, but for the last few weeks it feels like every cockroach under the sun who’s got even the remotest link to Action Wrestling thinks they’re justified in bugging me and asking “why?”.
Why did I attack Spencer Adams?
Why did I do it again? ...And then again?
Maybe if I knew I was gonna be asked to explain myself by every nosey bastard in the Wrestling business I might not have bothered, it didn’t seem that big a deal at the time.
So why the fuck do you think I did it?
Growing up in the old GDR he’d been told by everyone in a position of authority that America was the worst place in the world to avoid at all costs, and at the same time he’d been told by everyone young that America was the best place in the world and to get there no matter what.
These days, Matthias wasn’t anti-American as such, he was completely indifferent, he was anti-people and it was an unfortunate quirk of Americans that they were people, same as the ones from anywhere else in the world.
Images of America that you saw in the old communist half of Germany seemed, one way or the other, to always centre around the White House, but Matthias could never understand the relevance, it was just a building?
I couldn’t resist.
I was there, backstage and all I could hear was this moaning coming from the ring.
“Blah, Blah no one respects me enough”.
“Something, something I won something in an old company that hasn’t been relevant for years and you should all still be impressed”.
Everyone knows, there’s one thing I can’t stand above anything else and that’s entitlement. “I deserve a title shot because no one cared last time I had one so I should get another go”. I get it, you’ve earnt it in your eyes because you’ve been here ages so you can make these demands, and to be fair, it usually works.
But I thought this time I’d give you exactly what you wanted. Something came over me and I decided I was gonna shut you up. Of course I see the irony, you bleat about wanting another title shot and I hand you one on a plate but let’s be honest, the Spencer Adams that’s gonna show up at Revolution is going to be a pale shade of Spencer Adams.
And, actually, isn’t The White House the perfect place for us to do this?
When Matthias first moved to the states all those years ago he didn’t have a lot of points of reference. He’d heard of the Statue of Liberty, he knew there was a big hole in the ground called The Grand Canyon and he knew the president lived at the white house. Lady Liberty was cool in person, the big hole turned out to be genuinely impressive… but the White House was just a house.
Famous for always being present.
Famous for being a relic.
Famous for being famous.
Sound like someone we know?
I’m not some evil foreigner who hates the USA, or the President, or the White House, it’s just that this venue means NOTHING at all to me.
Same as you Spencer. I wasn’t waiting to attack you that show, you don’t mean enough to me that that was planned. I don’t think we’ve ever spoken before this week, up to that night I didn’t give a shit about you, I didn’t dislike you, you were just nothing.
But this title means everything to me, and I was not gonna stand there and listen to you act like the only purpose of a belt like mine is to give Spencer Adams some legitimacy. You were in the process of boring everyone silly with a list of everything you’d achieved in Action Wrestling and before, you think that if people belittle your vision of your legacy after all that, they’re gonna somehow care after one more?
Or do you think the reason no one cares might be a bit closer to home?
This belt is not, and never will be a prop for Spencer Adams to try and prove he’s more than the B level guy everyone sees him as.
Just like The White House to Americans, Spencer Adams is more important to the world in his own mind than in any kind of reality. It’s just a building. You’re just a wrestler.
If you hadn’t already guessed, the place, the crowd, the event of this week has no bearing on anything that’s happened or is going to. I’ll ignore the surroundings just like I ignored you for nearly a year until you pissed me off.
So I’ll answer everyone’s question of “why?” for you right now because from what I can tell, everyone is missing the point.
I didn’t attack Spencer Adams because of what he represents to me, some established star for me to make my point against. Much the opposite, I attacked Spencer Adams because of what he doesn’t represent to me. He doesn’t represent a worthy Hardcore Champion, he doesn’t represent someone who can stand in a wrestling ring and complain about how no one respects him after many years of trying to get people to respect him, he doesn’t represent much at all.
Spencer, anyone who stands with a microphone and demands relevance almost certainly isn’t worthy of it. I could tell you I hate you... I don’t. I could tell you fighting at the White House means the world to me, or makes me angry... it doesn’t.
This Sunday is just a match to me, you’re just an opponent. One that can have done what he wants in the past, and can do what he wants in the future and I won’t care, but he is not taking this belt from me this week because that’s what does matter to me.
