The oxygen came to life in the metallic hallway as electricity began to crackle through the air and Chinese voices spoke in frantic confusion. They watched the atoms split in between the cracks of the world and a bright light flashed, temporarily blinding them all. When they were able to see again they looked towards the mysterious anomaly, but only a small ashen circle remained on the floor. One of them approached with caution, holding his QBZ-95 in an offensive position.
“Bàogào, shìbīng”, the squadron leader yelled.
As the soldier turned to make an assessment to the squadron leader, his body sagged like a wet blanket as a spigot of blood spat from his head. The sound of machine gun fire tore through the hallway, rendering anyone in the room deaf and concussed. Magazines emptied and the terrified soldiers began to reload their weapons. As one struck his box magazine into place, blood sprayed from his throat in another invisible strike and he fell to the floor.
“Nàlǐ” the squadron leader yelled, pointing to the floor.
In the pools of oozing plasma on the pristine metal floor appeared fresh boot prints, steadily and methodically approaching the surviving soldiers. They fired their carbines in the direction of the invisible one’s bloody prints, but two quick metallic ricochets sent the bullets back towards their origins. The pinging bullets scramble the brains of the skulls of they penetrate and leave two husks on the floor.
“Chètuì!” the squadron leader yells as he turns tail and runs around the corner.
The second to last man turns to run but is tripped forward. He falls flat as an invisible sword slices through him and his head bounces across the floor and stares at the squadron leader. He’s fidgeting with a keypad but his hands are violently shaking. He turns around, aims his carbine, and pulls the trigger...but his gun jams. Electricity crackles around the invisible man as his stealth unit begins to wear away. The cloak crumbles away as a man in a metallic white suit appears, the face a blank white mask with only slits for eyeholes.
The commander fixes the jam on his weapon and aims to fire once more, but a quick throwing knife slices the fingers from his hand. The metal man dashes forward and pierces the chest of the squad leader with an old school katana. The squad leader coughs up blood before his head lumps to the side and he shifts from his mortal coil. The metal man pulls the sword out and looks toward the keypad next to the door.
He picks up a severed finger from the floor, puts in the correct password, then uses the finger print scanner that appears in a small slot. The door whooshes open, causing the body in front of him to fall to the floor, and the metal man steps over him into a laboratory. Chinese scientists huddle anxiously in the dark. One brave soul makes a dash for the exit, but a swift flick of the metal mans wrists splits the scientist in ‘twain, causing the others to scream in fear and double down on their protective grouping.
The metal man ignores them and heads towards a glass display case. He opens it carefully and scans the shelves, looking closely for something specific. His hand grips gently around a vial as he finds what he’s looking for. He holds it up and raises his left hand to that side of his helmet.
“I’ve recovered the sample, Father”, he speaks in a distorted, robotic voice.
“Thank you”, a voice replies, “Its time to come home son. But first, you know what you have to do.”
“Of course”, he answers.
The metal man looks on the shelf once more and grabs another vial, seemingly at random.
SARS-CoV-2
He throws it at the huddled scientists and the vial shatters, misting them in whatever vapors broke free from the tube. Electricity begins to crackle around the metal man once more as his atomic particles disperse and he teleports away.
