If you're looking for a story, you've come to the right place, for I have an exciting tale of death defying odds, reverence, tradition, passion and glory. I was lucky when I was a young boy, for when I was but ten years old my friend and I left the heat of Mexico for the bright lights of America and the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. For you see, my friend had been training long and hard for his American debut in the promotion known as Action Wrestling. Though he spoke no English of his own, he knew that with me in tow as his translator, that he would succeed. He was a man of danger, a man of drive and determination, a man who knew that great things were in store for him.
He was the man known...as El Tigre Del Sol!
His story in Action Wrestling has humble origins. El Tigre and I found ourselves in the winding halls of the Amway Center, we had been told to look for a man in a blue suit with the CBS logo pinned on the lapel. We figured it would be an easy task, but finding this Nate Burleson was more difficult than we had imagined. El Tigre spoke to me in Spanish, knowing that I would be the only ears privy to his thoughts.
"I feel like a rat trapped in a maze, looking for this man as though he were my cheese," he said. It was reassuring, knowing he was just as lost as I was. "What do you think, Miguel?"
"We just gotta keep looking," I replied back to him in kind in Spanish, "We're bound to find him eventually."
"I hope you are right, my young friend."
We continued searching for almost twenty minutes until finally, we found him. Nate was conversing with some of the female fans of Action Wrestling, I couldn't tell at my young age if it was simple fraternizing or if he was looking for something more. Nevertheless, the man was deep entrenched in this conversation, too much so to notice the two of us. Lacking the knowledge of social norms I know now, I screamed out to the man "HEY NATE, OVER HERE!" as loudly as I could. This caught his attention for sure, and his bid his lady friends adieu before coming over to us. Though I could not see his face through the mask, I could tell El Tigre was slightly embarrassed at all of the attention I had just brought forward to us. I chuckled.
"Well well well, you must be the new face on the block...or should I say, new Mask on the block," Burleson said. El Tigre responded with a punctuated "Si!" Burleson looked down to me, saying "And you must be...?"
"Miguel, El Tigre Del Sol's agent and translator, motherfucker!" I look back and cringe at how vulgar I was in my youth, but then again, who isn't. Nate laughed.
"Watch it now, we just got this CBS deal, don't get us thrown off now kid."
"Yeah yeah, I gotchu. El Tigre and I heard you wanted a few words from us?"
"Yes! Just a few words on all three of them, nothing more," he said, taking out his phone to record. "Just talk naturally Mr. Tigre, I'm sure Miguel will do you a good job making sure they know exactly what you say."
I began to repeat everything Burleson had told El Tigre, every word brought forth a nod and a "Si" from El Tigre. El Tigre told me a few words, to which I translated back to Burleson "He says he's ready to start."
"Okay good! Tell us, what are your thoughts on Travis Blake?" he asked. I repeated the question to El Tigre, who began speaking slowly, casually, as though he was having fun. I smiled and reported back to Burleson.
"El Tigre knows the type of person Senor Travis is. A man of peak physical condition, who believes he's a gift from the gods to humanity. A living, breathing piece of art. But unlike art, he is a man, a man who should know better than to be as arrogant and pompous as he is, because all he will is make himself look like a buffoon when El Tigre Del Sol hits him with the Slam Del Sol."
"I see," Burleson said. "What about Patti Rose?"
El Tigre spoke, this time more solemnly, as though he had regret for what he knew what he must do to succeed: crush poor Patti Rose's dreams.
"El Tigre has much respect for Rose, he recognizes her undeniable fighting spirit and her want to regain her former glories. He wishes he could have seen her in her prime thirty years ago, he feels she would have been a force to be reckoned with. The sad truth, however, is that she is in the ring with El Tigre Del Sol, a youthful man with enough energy for five Patti Roses, and one who is capable of wrestling circles around both her and the other two competitors in the ring. He says he shall not bring dishonor to Patti Rose's, but that he will defeat her all the same."
"Gotta do what you gotta do," Burleson responded. "And lastly, what about "Beowulf" Wyatt Erickson?"
El Tigre's tone suddenly became more tense and fast, as he spoke it became increasingly clear just how much he had focused on Erickson as opposed to the other two. And for good reason.
"El Tigre says that men like Erickson bring disrespect to the art of lucha and the art of masks as a whole. To Erickson, his mask is merely a prop, used to frighten small children and be forgotten about moments later as he takes it off once his entrance is done. El Tigre's mask, oh that is perhaps the most important possession in the world to him! He also says that Beowulf represents violence for the mindless sake of violence! This is something that El Tigre Del Sol cannot allow to go unchecked in his Action Wrestling debut. He warned Erickson that he should watch out, as El Tigre will be looking to pin him the most out of everyone in the match."
El Tigre nodded as he heard me speak, knowing I reaching the climax of my promo.
"As well, El Tigre said one more thing. He said that everyone in the AW locker room should be put on notice, as he is here to bring glory and honor to both his name, his mask, and the entirety of lucha libre! And you can quote him on that"
