Part I: R+R
“What happened?”
“Issues with the timing matrix. Other than that, the parameters were flawless.”
Two mysterious voices speak out of view. Lab equipment hums in harmonious discord as the view focuses in on Sun Vulcan Sentai standing upright, though he appears to be in a state of augmented catatonia. Dozens of reports run on screens to the left and right of him as the voices continue.
“Don’t let it happen again.”
“Yes, my liege.”
“Is he resisting the treatment?”
“Heavens, no. Just a minor glitch, nothing to be concerned about, I assure you.”
Silence.
“I trust you. Let’s get it right this time. I’m ready for this project to realize it’s full potential.”
The whoosh of a mechanical door sounds as one of the men leaves.
“Liebert, run full diagnostics.”
“Diagnostic check initiated”, a robotic voice replies, “Diagnostic checks completed. All systems at full capacity.”
“Anything I should be concerned with?”
“There is one thing.”
An audio file begins to play.
Part II: Unnatural
“Have you lost your edge, son?”
In the courtyard of his temple, Sun Vulcan preps for his upcoming match. He’s surrounded on all sides by four masked opponents, each of them brandishing kendo sticks. He holds his out in posture as they begin to circle around him, poised to strike, waiting for a crack in his defense.
“No, father.”
“Then prove it.”
The masked opponents begin to attack and Sun Vulcan fights to fend them off. He parries attacks from the left then circles around to hit one with a strike to the stomach. One of them manages to strike him on the shoulder and they retreat to their offensive circling.
“You had two opponents last week and couldn’t secure victory. This week there will be four. Unknown variables. Would you rely on your partners?”
“If they have victory in their hearts, then yes.”
His attackers strike again, this time all at once. He circles around, bounces all of their strikes off his kendo and knocks them back. One goes for a lunge, but he circles around him and lays a high kick into his back, sending him sprawling in a forward roll.
“You never know what evil lies in a man or woman’s heart. You must always be wary. Head on a swivel.”
His father holds his hand out open palm. The masked attackers all remove their masks and their faces appear as his opponents. Father closes his hand in a striking position and grunts for them to attack. The four close in once more, this time their strikes more calculated and vicious then their previous attempts. Sun Vulcan clears his mind as he fights them off, the clacking of the kendo sticks echoing loud in the otherwise peaceful courtyard.
He gracefully fends them off.
Each one falls harder then the last.
His father charges as his last opponent, but Sun Vulcan jabs the tip of his kendo stick directly into his chest, causing him to fall backwards to the ground. He holds it over his fathers fallen body, who wipes a bit of saliva from his chin and smiles. He helps him off the ground, but his father pulls him down, takes control, and holds his own kendo into his throat.
“Never relent. Not until you know your opponent is finished.”
“Yes, father.”
“That’s enough practice.”
They both get off the ground and look toward the setting sun.
“I worry for you, son. Your compassion has always been your weakness. Never make that mistake. You’re used to fighting single minded monsters, but men are more vicious in nature. Your opponents will sense your vulnerability and use it against you. There’s only so much I can teach you, the rest of it you’ll have to learn through experience. Do you understand?”
“Yes, father.”
His father puts his hand on his shoulder as Sun Vulcan folds his arms.
“You must be prepared. The real test has only just begun.”
