Brothers Christian and Guillermo Guillen (pictured above) have recently been taking the New Mexico independent wrestling scene by force. Utilizing a combination of Christian's size, power, and amateur wrestling background, along with Guillermo's speed, agility, and Mexican-Lucha style, the tag-team, calling themselves "Compañeros de Armas" (the Brothers in Arms), have made an immediate impression. Local wrestling companies have been lining up to sign the two brothers, going so far as paying the travel expenses for the two (in the professional wrestling world, this is unheard of at the local level).
When asked about their potential, owner and manager of Santa Fe-based wrestling promotion Neo Aztec Promotions, Angel Cuevos said that the two just have the "it" factor. Cuevos went on to elaborate the two are the perfect mix of size and speed, flash and substance, that the independent wrestling scene thrives for. Not only that, Cuevos added, but the two are incredibly far ahead at this point in the careers when it comes to work ethic and locker-room leadership. "When they walk into the locker-room, they command the respect of the men and women who are already there, but not in a way that makes them seem like some sort of Judge Dredd-style enforcer", said one Phoenix, Arizona based wrestler that has worked with the two brothers.
Guillermo, the lucha wrestler of the tag-team, was asked what makes them such a good tag team. "We're twin brothers, so we've known each other from the womb. I know what Christian is going to do before he does it, and Christian knows what I'm thinking before I even think it. It's simpatico." When asked about why professional wrestling, Christian pointed towards his family heritage. "Our madre was an only mother, but she had the support of her side of the family. We grew up around our grandmother and grandfather, along with lots of aunts and uncles. They were all really big into the lucha scene, and pushed us that direction pretty early on. Once Guillermo and I figured out what have knack for the sport, we took to it and have been honing it ever since."
It's hard to say what's next for the "Compañeros de Armas", but as one promoter said, "the next thing for these two is the national spotlight. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the major companies is calling them right now." Whatever happens, the two will always be remembered as Santa Fe's Sons, and we here at the New Mexican will make sure to keep track of where they go from here.
