Most wrestlers are a product of their environment but me.. I was always destined for bigger things. I was the incarnation of a successful experiment dreamt up before I was even born.
You see, I was born in the wrestling ring. Literally. Which wasn’t intended I’ll be honest, just a case of bad timing for my Mother, but in reality my birth was just the next stage of a science project masterminded by my father years earlier.
I did not need to fight to survive. I could have chose any path I wanted in life. But this was the plan, forged for me before I had even been conceived. You see my father wrestled the great British wrestlers of his day. It’s not unusual to be a second or even third generation grappler in this era. If you cast an eye over the pickings of this industry and inevitably the apples have not fallen far. Well I am no different in that respect, but I’ll be the first to admit my Father, as talented as he was, did not amount to much success. Nor was he a household name. He had his fair share of wins and upset the Apple cart from time to time but if you read the papers and watch the old footage he was all but erased from the records and memories of those that were there. The stars of that era were all super heavyweights, sensationalised for their size and strength and nothing else in between. Well, I think that’s where the idea was born. This Dr. Frankenstein-like character who dreamed of his unborn son becoming one of the greatest wrestlers that ever lived. People laughed but his thinking was ahead of its time and far beyond the confines of the gyms of the River Thames. To be honest I remember little else from my childhood except wrestling practice, but that’s probably why I grew into what I have become; the best pound for pound wrestler in the world.
Now it’s not unheard of for a wrestler to burst onto the scene and proclaim he’s the best in the business. I don’t criticise my opponents when they say the same thing because if they don’t believe that’s what they are then they’re not in the right industry. But when I say I go to lengths that the rest of you guys probably never ever considered, I truly mean it. I live and breathe professional wrestling. Everything I do is all designed to keep the brain as sharp as the body. It doesn’t matter how enduring or intense a match is, the aim is to be the one standing at the end. And believe me when I say, that’s always the case.
At an early age I was sent to Mexico, Japan and even Puerto Rico to hone my craft and face as many different opponents as physically possible. It wasn’t about the winning or losing back then, there was always a bigger picture in mind. But even then people were tripping over themselves with praise. There was always a long road ahead. Even now there is work to be done, but this number one contenders match marks the first step on my new path to greatness.
I didn’t come here to fight overweight powerhouses or talentless bodybuilders like my Father. Boxing, mixed martial arts, in every other combat sport you fight people of your own size and weight. So why not wrestling? I am the best pound for pound wrestler in the world, yet that accounts for nothing in this sport, where junior heavyweights are expected to go toe to toe with their obese counterparts.
Put simply, if you are ‘two-oh-one’ or under, I am better than you. No wrestler goes through life undefeated, especially in the unforgiving and unnecessary world of multi-man and tag matches. But one on one I won’t be far off that mark.
I am the King of the Cruiserweights. I don’t expect anybody to bow to me, but in time, you will show me the respect that I deserve.
