There's nothing like Opening Day in the D. I'm sure every city says the same thing, but in Detroit, it truly is something special. It's a city-wide celebration for a city that doesn't have much to celebrate.
The hard-core fans are going to tell you that the casuals ruin it. They don't care about the team. They just want to drink and party. What's wrong with that?
Muru is a pretty huge fan. He has vague memories of the last time the Tigers won the World Series in 1984. He definitely remembers the heartache of 2006 and 2012.
It's a new year and anything can happen.
As Muru walks the streets surrounding Comerica Park, he takes in the sites. It's a bit chilly outside so he wears a hooded sweatshirt under his Tarik Skubal jersey. No one pays him any notice.
He enters a local bar where he knows the owner. In another time and place maybe there could have been something between them.
Bartender: Moooo!
This is something she's always called him despite him telling her the first syllable was Mur like murder, not like a loose lipped cow.
Muru: I'm trying to stay undercover.
Bartender: No one cares who you are. If they do, they're too drunk to notice.
Muru: Wow, I didn't know I was so forgotten.
Bartender: Not forgotten, never worth remembering.
The two share a laugh.
Bartender: So what brings you in? It's been awhile.
Muru: I figured I'd see how you were doing and grab a beer before I head inside for the game.
She grabs him a Bud Light.
Muru: So how are things?
Bartender: Not too bad. Hopefully the team is decent this year and brings more people out. Football season was the best in awhile.
Muru: Glad to hear it. I'm not sure if you heard but I'm back wrestling again.
Bartender: Yeah I saw, hope you find whatever it is you're looking for.
Muru: What's that mean?
Bartender: A couple of years ago you seemed happy. I thought you were done.
Muru: So did I…
Bartender: I just want you to be happy.
Muru: Me too…
He takes a drink of his beer and they continue to talk for a bit.
When I saw who my opponent was this week the name sounded familiar. I can usually remember when I've faced someone in the ring before. I knew that wasn't where I knew him. Then it hit me, the NBA.
At first I thought it had to be a coincidence. There's no way it could be the same guy. Then I thought why would someone go by Thon Maker in a business where people change their names all the time. No it had to be him.
I want to be clear. I don't know Thon Maker because of his accomplishments on the court. He isn't LeBron or Steph Curry. I remember him because he played for my local team the Detroit Pistons. As sad as they are, maybe they could use Thon Maker again.
Thon, I'm glad you've found another career after basketball didn't work out. Professional wrestling can be very rewarding and very tough. Hopefully you'll be able to find success. It just isn't going to be against me.
I've been wrestling since I was eighteen years old. This was the only thing I've wanted to do. It wasn't a second choice for me, it was the only choice. If I wouldn't have been successful I don't know where I'd be. Even in my later years I'm still able to prove myself.
My trajectory in Action Wrestling changed at Fools Gold. I went from just another guy to having a shot at being World Heavyweight Champion. It happened quicker than I imagined, but I'm not going to waste this opportunity.
That means I can't let anyone hold me back, especially you Thon.
I'm too experienced and well frankly, I'm too good at what I do to lose to you. You're not in my league. You probably never will be. That's ok. You can still have a career in this business. There's always room for a big man to make the rest of us look good.
I look forward to our match Thon. Use it as a learning experience.
