That match didn't go as expected. In my head I saw it ending with my hand raised as I stood over the slain giant. Instead I won by count out. It doesn't hit quite the same way, but a victory is a victory.
I might be lucky to even get that. As the referee was making his count, I could see that DRAUGR wasn't done with me. If it wasn't for Lexi Sparkles, I might have been done for. It looks like she was protecting her granddaddy, but what if she was protecting me from him?
Do I have a guardian angel?
There are a lot of people in this business that want to limit their time out on the road. They have families, significant others, or they just want to be home. Muru doesn't have much of anything that keeps him home. When he's out on the road he prefers to stay there.
With Match Madness in Calgary this week, Muru has already found his way into town. He wasn't expecting a match but is looking forward to building on last week's victory.
Muru just wants to be by himself, but that's not always easy. The fans are smart, they know when the show is coming to town. In all of Calgary there's no bigger ticket than Action Wrestling.
This is the reason why Muru is wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap as he sits in a small diner. In the movies this works as a perfect disguise for going unnoticed. In the real world, it tends to draw attention.
Are you famous?
Muru looks to his right and sees a young girl standing there.
Young Girl: Are you famous?
Muru: Why would you think that?
Young Girl: You look like you're hiding from someone. That means you're either famous or a bad person.
He thinks to himself.
Muru: I'm not really famous and I don't think I'm a bad person.
Young Girl: Then why are you hiding?
Muru: I'm not hiding. I just want to be left alone.
The girl doesn't get the hint.
Muru: Didn't anyone ever tell you not to talk to strangers?
Young Girl: All the time…
She doesn't seem phased by this.
Young Girl: This place is pretty quiet and I can scream really loud.
Muru: Please don't do that.
Young Girl: Then tell me why you're hiding.
Muru: Again, I'm not hiding. But if you must know I'm here for work.
Young Girl: So you are famous!
Muru: If you think wrestlers are famous then sure.
Young Girl: Oh…I'm not allowed to watch wrestling. My mom says it's too violent.
Muru: Where is your mom anyway?
He looks around the diner hoping to find a frantic mother looking for her lost child.
Young Girl: She's right there…
She points to a waitress rushing around delivering food and refilling cups of coffee.
Muru: Of course…
The waitress finally realizes that her child is not where she left her and sees her talking to Muru.
Waitress: Elizabeth, leave that man alone!
She walks over to her daughter.
Waitress: I'm so sorry about her. She's inquisitive.
Muru: It's ok, she thought I might be famous.
Elizabeth: Or a bad person…
Muru: I told her I'm neither.
Elizabeth: He's a wrestler.
Her mother doesn't look impressed.
Waitress: You must be in town for the show this weekend. It's brought a bunch of business to the diner. The tips help when you're a single mother.
He nods at her. As he looks at her he can tell that she's attractive, even with being a mess from work. She is also at least fifteen years younger than him.
Muru: Yeah, I'm here for the show. I could get you tickets if you want.
Elizabeth: Too violent!
Waitress: I appreciate the offer but yeah I don't think it's the place for my daughter.
Muru: Fair enough. But I'll leave some tickets if you change your mind. Can I get your name?
Was that smooth?
Waitress: My name is Emma, but you don't have to do that. They'll just go to waste. I really need to get back to work.
Muru: My name's Muru, if you decide to go just tell them that and your name.
She walks away and calls for her daughter to follow her. Muru can see her scolding Elizabeth as she takes her back to the booth she was supposed to be sitting in.
Muru: At least I've got a name…
It's time for Match Madness, the wrestling equivalent of a popular college basketball tournament. The card is stacked and anyone lucky enough to have a ticket really should do themselves a favor and be there.
My match might not be the highlight of the night, but I think you'll be entertained. If anything we can all find out together what the Mystery Reward will be. I don't know what it is, but I want it!
The only problem is I'm facing three other men who probably want it as well.
My first opponent is Isara. I couldn't tell you anything about the guy outside of that he's Samoan. Just like any good Samoan he's got an on brand nickname. When I was younger Samoans were nothing more than savages. Now, they are known for being as tough as they come. I'm a bit of a tough guy myself.
You're known as The Samoan Striker. What are you striking? A match, up a band, a conversation. Are you on the picket line fighting for better health benefits for your fellow wrestlers? Are you striking fear into the hearts of your opponents? No that definitely isn't it.
The second man I'm facing sounds like he belongs on the golf course. I'm not much of a golfer but I've hit the green before. Apparently this version of The Green has nothing to do with the gentleman's game. This guy is some sort of supernatural being.
I think I remember seeing a movie about this guy. Somebody went on a journey to face The Green Knight. It was a bit of a bore. It's a good thing I'm in the match to add entertainment value. You might be big and scary, but do you have what it takes to win? That remains to be seen.
We go from supernatural to Super Mario. I know the easy route is to make video game jokes. I can't speak to whether the wrestler is the Miyamoto created plumber has come to life. What I do know is this guy is tough. I also know he likes to run his mouth.
It's the talking that I think he's most famous for. He's had more matches in Action Wrestling than I've had but does anyone remember what happened? No. They remember Mario talking about his girlfriend or the mafia. Things that when the bell rings doesn't matter.
I know you want to be this tough guy. I know you want to be feared. Outside of the ring maybe you are. Maybe that Iron Fist mentality works on the people of New York but this is a wrestler company. You know what does the talking? Wrestling.
I'm going to take you seriously because if I let my guard down it could he over for me. The problem is in my eyes, you're a caricature. You blur the lines so much it's hard to know what's real. Mario, I promise you I'm real and I'm ready to win.
At Match Madness it isn't going to be easy for any of us to get the win. I guess it's fitting that the prize is a mystery. I feel like we're all a mystery to each other. It could be the adrenaline or maybe I'm just a fool but I think I've got the best chance to win this match. I've got the experience and the drive. You other guys definitely don't have my will.
I'm in Action Wrestling to prove to myself I've still got something left in the tank. Hope you're ready boys cause it's time to put on a show![/u][/i]
It's the night before Match Madness and Muru is sitting in his hotel room alone. Sure this is what he signed up for, but sometimes it does get lonely. In his earlier days he might have found a special friend to keep him company.
Tonight he just thinks about the waitress and her daughter. Where did he go wrong? Everyone around him grew up and had families of their own. He just never thought about it. His first love has always been the ring.
Is it too late for something more?
Muru: I don't think this is going to work for me anymore. Something has to change.
He downs the rest of his beer and reaches for another. It's going to be one of those nights.
I might be lucky to even get that. As the referee was making his count, I could see that DRAUGR wasn't done with me. If it wasn't for Lexi Sparkles, I might have been done for. It looks like she was protecting her granddaddy, but what if she was protecting me from him?
