…My neck
….My back
Muru is in bed staring up at the ceiling. Ever since he decided to make a return to the ring his body has been fighting his heart.
Muru: The pain is just temporary. I'll be back in ring shape eventually.
He slowly gets out of bed and makes his way to the bathroom.
…You don't have to do this
This is true. He might not have made it rich but he can live comfortably. It's been twenty-eight years since his debut. What does he have to prove?
…Nothing
Muru: Not bad!
He looks at himself in the mirror and is pleased that his body is looking more athlete than alcoholic.
…Still a bit of a beer belly
From his bedroom he hears his phone ringing. One more quick glance in the mirror and then he dashes off to answer it.
Muru: Hey bro, what's up?
The voice on the other end says something that causes some alarm.
Muru: What do you mean? You've been helping me train and now you're saying you're out?
Now Muru is starting to get frustrated.
Muru: I understand but you're not training. No one is asking you to return to the ring.
Muru is defeated.
Muru: We're family. I'd do it for you. I've done it for you!
The person on the other end hangs up.
Muru: I guess I'll have to finish this on my own.
Action Wrestling…I appreciate the second chance. I don't know why things didn't work out the first time but if I had to guess, my heart wasn't in it.
This time around you're going to get the best version of Muru I can muster. Will it be good enough to succeed? That remains to be seen.
I feel good though, like I can take in the world. That's a good thing because the wrestling business can be cutthroat. It's one of those careers where you leave a literal pile of bodies on your way to the top. I've been there, I know.
Now I find myself back at the bottom. No one in Action Wrestling cares what I've done in the past. Why should they? All they are thinking about is how they can prevent me from using them as stepping stones.
If things go my way, they can't.
In my experience when you've just signed a new contract one of two things happen. They either place you in a match against another new acquisition and see which one comes out on top. If you're really lucky you might get option B, a match with someone you're supposed to mop the ring with.
I got the dreaded third option…
I already know where I stand. I'm looked at as someone to pad the established stars stats. A long time veteran who may have some name recognition that will move the needle a bit when defeated. That's not what I signed up for.
I don't make the matches, but I sure as hell have a say in the outcome.
DRAUGR…my first opponent, the one I'm to be served up to.
I don't know who this guy is. I probably can't even say his name properly. One thing I do know is that he's a tough son of a bitch.
If I were to go by his Action Wrestling bio I would think he's some sort of experiment but that seems like science fiction. But looking at the guy I'm not going to question his origins. I'm not that stupid.
I'm sure DRAUGR doesn't need extra motivation when it comes to facing me. The guy won a title in his first singles match. That's impressive. That shows the company sees something in you. Add to the fact he was eliminated from Match Madness and I expect he'll be ready to tear me limb from limb.
If he's not ready yet, I'm sure Sara Pettis will get him there.
I want it to be known that I'll also be ready. We might be vastly different, but I'm a professional. The last thing I'm going to do is give up before we even start.
There was a time when I was known as The Greatest Show on Earth because I could entertain like no one else. Now maybe I'm not quite the show I once was, but I'll bet I'm still pretty damn good.
So DRAUGR when that bell rings I wish you nothing but the best. I know I can take a loss, but I hope you'll be able to handle it if I win.
No one likes a sore loser.
The day is finally here.
…Where is it?
It's only a few hours until Muru's flight is going to leave. The it he is looking for is his passport. He's always kept it with his travel bags just in case he ever needed it. Today though it's not there.
…This can't be happening
He's searched almost everywhere. The last place he has to look is the junk drawer in his kitchen. The one with old batteries, pens and other things no one has a place for.
…Please
He opens the drawer and frantically searches.
…Yes!
Finding the passport he is finally able to relax.
Muru: Let's go to Canada.
