Driller is sitting alone in an empty Canadian Tire Center one day before his match against Tatiana Jolee on Monday Night CanadaClash. The TV Title is draped on his shoulder. He’s waiting to start his promo.
His smartphone pings. It’s a text message from Buck Branson. Driller had given him his number the day they talked at the bar.
I saw you on the social media bragging about the way you won the Television Championship from that girl. You’re proud of the way you won? I don’t think your daddy would have been if he had that same opportunity as you.
Driller smirks at the self-righteous tone of the message. I’m not going to let him ruin my mood and spoil my fun, he thinks to himself. He puts the phone back in his pocket, not committed to responding but not ruling it out either.
Producer: Okay, Driller. We’re ready to go in 5, 4, 3,…
While the camera pans in on Driller, he starts singing to the tune of “Jolene” by Dolly Parton.
Driller: “Jo-lee, Jo-lee, Jo-lee, Jo-leeeee! I’m begging of you, please don't take this match!”
He laughs.
Driller: I’m kidding. I’m just in a jovial mood because I took the Television Championship off that know-nothing dipshit, Jessie Lee, a person I have no respect for.
But I respect you, Tatiana.
When I was recovering from my injuries last year, I watched AW, and while I was agonizing over the people who were holding the Cruiserweight Championship, there was one thing that made me feel better: watching you pursue the World Championship.
When you reached the summit at XIII back in October, it was incredible. You and Jill Park tore each other apart in that Steel Cage Taipei Deathmatch, and no matter what Jill did to you, you kept getting up. When it was all over, you were the one holding the World Championship. You overcame all the odds.
I remember feeling real good watching you that night, and as a wrestling fan, which I’ve been my whole life, that’s all I’ve ever cared about.
But that feeling goes away, and if you watch wrestling long enough, you find that, after a while, the only reason you’re watching is to have that feeling again. It’s a drug. You want that high, and the more time passes by without getting it, the more frustrated you become.
And I’ve become frustrated with you, Tatiana, because you haven’t made me feel that high since XIII.
You lost the title to Downfall at Turmoil, and as great a talent as he was, he didn’t inspire me like you did.
Gerard Angelo- another great wrestler, but he doesn’t inspire me.
And neither does our current World Champion, Teo Blaze.
When you failed to win your second World Title at Payback, you let me down.
Don’t let me down in our match this Monday. I need you to be the Jolee that was ripping the flesh off Jill Park and winning the World Title. I need that inspiration.
Please, INSPIRE ME.
Make me better.
Give me something to fight for.
Then again…
Maybe you should just get out of my way, because frankly, you had your time.
The fans of Action Wrestling need someone new to inspire them. They need someone else to supply them with the feeling they long for when they watch wrestling.
Is there a better candidate to fill the void that Tatiana Jolee has left in the fans’ hearts than me?
Think about it. You want someone who doesn’t quit? You don’t have to look any further than me.
I didn’t give up when I was rehabbing from my injuries for the last half of 2023.
I didn’t quit when Jessie Lee pinned me two weeks ago.
When my personal problems made me question myself and I went dark for a few days, did I stay in the dark? No! I figured my shit out and went to war with Jessie and Addy A at Payback.
When Addy A pinned me in the first fall and took my Cruiserweight Championship, did I lay down and die? No! I dusted myself off and fought like hell in the second fall.
And unlike Tatiana when Teo knocked her out to the apron, I took a Superwoman Punch from Jessie that knocked me to the outside, but I got right back in the ring so I could cover Addy and walk out as the Television Champion!
Can you think of a more inspirational person in AW than me? Can you think of a person who is more deserving of winning this tournament and becoming the Action Wrestling World Champion? Absolutely not.
And the powers that be know that I’m right. If you don’t count the months I was out, I’ve only been active in AW for four months. You know what I’ve spent those four months doing? Winning championships. My first night in, I won the Light Cup. I come back from injury and in my second match back, I win the Cruiserweight Title. Now, I’m standing here holding the third different championship I’ve won in AW and gearing up to win the biggest prize of them all.
Why does AW keep putting me in a position to be draped in glory? Maybe they think I’m special. Maybe they think that I can be the face of this promotion, the hero to millions of fans, the one the kids look up to.
I can be all those things. I can be the inspiration Tatiana Jolee used to be.
My ascent to the top doesn’t start in the first round of Match Madness. It started on May 22, 2023, when I made my debut in AW. This tournament is just a continuation of that ascent, and Tatiana Jolee is simply the next person for me to surpass.
So…
“Jo-lee, Jo-lee, Jo-lee, Jo-leeeee! I’m begging of you, please don't take this match!”
He laughs to himself one last time as the camera fades to black.
