Driller is in the Action Wrestling television production studio cutting his promo, but his mind is somewhere else.
Driller: This has been a particularly frustrating week for me. I found out something about my past that I didn’t know.
He thinks back to his meeting at a bar with Cliff “Buck” Branson, the legendary professional wrestler, a tough cowboy who made a name for himself in the rings of Japan.
Branson: You really think your Daddy left you and your Mama because he was some deadbeat?
Driller: Yeah. Who else would do that?
Branson: Son, what you don’t know about your Daddy could fill a book.
Driller: On top of that, I had a war of words with Jessie Lee over how we view the business of professional wrestling. She thought running down the Cruiserweight Division was the best way to promote a match. I told her it only did damage to her, the Television Championship, and Action Wrestling as a whole.
I was proud of myself for taking a stand.
And nobody gave a shit. In the end, I looked like the asshole, not her.
I thought I knew a thing or two about the pro wrestling business. It turns out I don’t know anything about anything.
Branson: Your Daddy left you and your Mama to become a professional wrestler.
Driller was stunned by this revelation, but he had his doubts.
Driller: How do you know that?
Branson: Because I’m the one that trained him.
He pulled a picture out of his wallet and showed Driller.
Driller: The only thing I do know is that last week, I won the triple threat match and earned myself a shot at Jessie’s Television Championship.
The big unknown at the end of that match was whether I could have kept Jessie down for the three-count after I dropped her with the DB-24. I was close, but ZMAC got in the way of the referee’s hand.
Still, did Jessie try to break up my eventual pin on ZMAC? Did she even move a muscle after I left her laying? Nope. My reasoning says I would have gotten the three-count on her, but now I’ll never know.
Branson: He was a quick learner, a natural, aggressive as hell. Could have been the best brawler in the sport. He woulda surpassed me. I had big plans for him. He and I were going to tag together and I was going to bring him to Japan where he could make some real money.
He was a good man, your Daddy. He always told me he wanted to make the most money he could in this sport so he could go back home and give you a better life than he had. And believe me, he would have.
He stopped and threw back a shot of bourbon.
Branson: But the best-laid plans of mice and men, right?
Driller: This week will be different. There won’t be any unanswered questions when you and I meet one-on-one, Jessie. Do I think it’s going to be easy for me? Of course not. You showed me as much at the end of Love Hurts.
No, it’s going to take a lot more to keep you down, but I’m more ready for you than anyone else I’ve faced in Action Wrestling. You are my most compatible opponent thus far. Hell, if I was capable of romantic feelings, I may even be in love with you.
But alas, the only thing I’m in love with is pain, and the object of my affection this Monday will be your pain. I hope your feelings are reciprocal, because whatever you give to me, I’m going to give to you even more. You want to break one of my bones? I’ll break two of yours. You want to bust me open and spill a few drops of my blood? I’ll slaughter you like a pig and drain you of yours. You want to drop me on my face with LEEthality? I’m going to…
On second thought, I probably shouldn’t go there. That’s a devastating move you got in your arsenal, and not even I know if I can come back from a move like that. Like I said, I’ve been learning lately that I don’t know anything.
Driller: What happened?
Branson: We went to Shreveport, Louisiana, where he was going to have his first match. The night before the match, he got into it with some drunk asshole at a bar who was harassing this group of ladies. Your Daddy wasn’t having none of it, so he confronted the guy; made him back down, too. A little while later, the guy followed your Daddy into the bathroom and…
His lips pursed as he tried to keep himself together.
Branson:…stabbed him in the stomach.
Driller: That’s why, before you can even think about hitting me with any of your finishing holds, I’m going to wear you down. I’m going to throw you around the ring and drop you on your head and neck. I’m going to strike you as hard as I can with my knees and my fists. If there’s any part of your body that I neglect to hurt, I’ll make sure to circle back around and give it the attention it deserves.
And when I am certain that you have nothing left, I’ll do the merciful thing. I’ll hoist you on my shoulders and send your head straight down into the canvas with the DB-24.
And the referee will slap his hand on the mat three times.
And I’ll become the new Television Champion.
And I’ll finally have the comfort of knowing that I can beat you.
He looks away as thinks back to his conversation with Branson one last time.
Driller: Why didn’t my Mom tell me any of this?
Branson: I don’t know, boy. That’s something you’re gonna have to ask her.
He looks back at the camera.
Driller: And I'll feel just a little less uncertainty than I did before.
