It has been weeks since the mighty DRAUGR was dethroned, but the real talk around the water cooler at Devil's Gate has been the revelation that he is, in fact, the father of Action Wrestling Hall of Famer Raging Dead. In 1975, at the age of 38, the man revealed to be Viktor Gust was a test subject in Projekt ICE. The cryo chamber was a success, and he remained frozen in time for 48 years.
Upon his return to the land of the living, the side effect of experimentation that caused him the most harm was a complete memory wipe. Over time, shadows of memories returned, until enough came back to piece together his true connection to the legacy of Devil's Gate.
In his latest fight, the mighty DRAUGR fought relentlessly against Jessie Lee in a Chairs, Chairs, and Chairs Match for the Action Wrestling World Television Championship. The match was brutal and surely left both combatants with mental scars that will take time to heal. In the end, the dominant reign of the strongest of the strong was ended in Madison Square Garden.
Where do we go from here? The now-former champion has been ostracized from Devil's Gate, being considered a failure by their measures. There have been no sightings of him since Holiday Bash nearly a month ago. His name appears in advertising for Monday Night Clash tomorrow, hailing from Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Today, our adventure begins in Queens, New York. Above a coffee shop is a small studio apartment, where we see minimal furniture, including a stool in the corner where the mighty DRAUGR is seated. With his head hanging down and long hair covering his face, we see his mask in his hands, staring up at him.
A door opens and closes. Footsteps approach from behind our view, and a stool is dragged over and placed in front of him. Now seated on that stool is the daughter-in-law of the mighty DRAUGR… Sara Pettis.
“How did you sleep? Or… did you… sleep? This is all still so strange, Vik. You've been hiding out here for weeks and… you still won't talk to me. Do you not… trust me? I'm the only one who has cared for you as a human. I told you all about what they did to Todd Metzger, and how I will always regret not stepping up and helping him when… deep down… I knew Devil's Gate was trying to destroy him.”
She waits for a response. Any kind of response. There's nothing.
“What they did to Todd… to you… to so many others… I didn't know about until I gained control of my father's shares in the company. That… combined with access granted to me by my late husband's will–”
He looks up, hair still covering his face. She smiles.
“Aahhh. There it is. This is the first you've looked me in the eyes, Vik. All I had to do… was bring up… your son. You would have been proud of Nathan. He was a good man, a good husband, a great father. His memory lives on through me, through his friends, through his fans… and through our daughter.”
She pauses.
“I don't quite know how to explain to Steph that her grandfather is only like three years older than me. She's only nine. She's not ready for all of… this.”
She stands up and places her hand on his broad shoulder.
“We've got to get to Charlotte, Vik. Even with Devil's Gate after you, you've got a contract with Action Wrestling to fulfill. You have a match with Hot Shot Wayne Austin. The winner gets a shot at the Omega Championship. I don't think that title means much to you, but winning… is important to you. You've already fought Wayne, and you won… kind of.”
He grumbles, and she backs away a step.
“Okay. I get it. He slipped on a spilled WayneWizer and you pinned him. A win is a win, Vik. There's no shame in how it all went down. You have another chance to do it your way. Not everyone gets a second chance and… that's what your whole life is now. A second chance at experiencing the joys and pains of life.”
She starts walking away, and then stops. She turns her head to him.
“There's fresh towels in the bathroom. Grab a quick shower and pack what you need for the show. I have access to a private jet from… a friend. It's ready to go when we are. I'm going to go downstairs and send Josie home early. It's been a slow day, and she'll love an afternoon off.”
End.
