“I’ve been down these back alleys so many times since a young age, Owen, that I can’t even imagine what awaits us here today.” Kevin zips up his black New Brotherhood hoody as him and Owen walk down the alley toward an ominous glow in the dark New York City sky.
“I can sense that you are drawn to this place just as much as me, my friend.” Owen pulls his coat closed.
“I may know these streets well, but I don’t believe I have ever been so enthralled with what’s truly below it as you are. I was nothing but a street urchin before your Uncle took me in. A pickpocket faceless child who knew nothing of the world except what was dropped into his lap. Your Uncle gave me a true purpose and allowed me to learn beneath his tree. I can’t imagine what you went through to get to where you are here today…” Kevin looks Owen up and down before turning his gaze back toward the flickering light in front of them.
“It’s the incident that draws me here the most… The moment I was sunk to the depths of the supernatural world.” Owen’s eyes widen a bit. “I couldn’t imagine what you went through yourself, but you seem to rise above it all, if you asked me.”
“And that right is why I brought you here, Owen… I didn’t rise above this world, I simply accepted it.” The two walk up to an opening in the alley where the ominous light was coming from. The space is strung up with Edison lights that luminate a homeless haven of tiny homes made up of recycled material it seems. The homeless folk collected in the space all look over to Bishop and Owen with excitement and open arms. A central figure amongst the clan steps forward, resembling a face from the past from New Blood Wrestling. The large bearded black man with grey dreads hanging down to his lower back opens his arms toward Bishop.
“Kevin Bishop, do my eyes deceive me?” The old man lets out a raspy laugh.
“They do not, Lamarche, how have you been? Hope our care packages have helped you and yours.” Lamarche shakes Bishop’s hand and nods.
“Oh, most definitely my old friend. Ralph and The Captain have done wonders with what you’ve given and as you can see, we’ve truly made the most of it.” Lamarche shows off the upscale hobo den to his visitors before he turns his gaze to Owen. “This the kid? Darren’s nephew?”
Bishop nods and Owen extends a hand to Lamarche. “Please to meet you, sir.
Lamarche shakes his hand with a crooked smile. “The pleasure is mine, I’m sure. You have his eyes, you know?”
“My Uncle’s?” Owen gives an inquisitive look to Lamarche.
“Damn straight your Uncle. Darren Knight was the king of these streets well before Kevin Bishop here came along. He gave all of my people a purpose when society chewed us up and spat us out. I loved your Uncle and i don’t believe a single soul would be where they are here today, yourself included… If it wasn't for your Uncle Darren.” Lamarche releases the handshake and begins to cackle in a drunken fashion.
“Yeah, I see it, man. I can see what my Uncle did for everyone, myself included. Sadly, I haven’t been in contact with him for sometime now…” Lamarche pats Owen on the right arm.
“In due time, my friend, I just sat with him a few weeks ago right here in our commune. He’s proud of the both of you coming together like you have and how far The Brotherhood has come under your leadership, Kevin.” Lamarche smiles to the guys.
“We have been challenged beyond belief, Lamarche, inside and outside of our profession that Darren taught us about. We have our demons that we can seem to shake or overtake… We also have a never ending line of eyes being placed upon our prestigious championships… In fact we have familiar faces at Holiday Bash that we can’t over look.” Kevin looks to Owen. “But if there’s anything we’ve proven thus far, is that we are a cohesive team like no other.”
“I appreciate the kind words, Lamarche and I have a special place in my heart for Uncle Darren’s pride in our efforts…. but we aren’t done hunting. I battled a seasoned veteran and a woman with the fiery spirit of a true Kitsune… I may not have come out the victor, but I believe I made my stance known to the entire world that I am a true competitor.”
“It’s true, Lamarche, I watched in awe at how above the rest, Owen was in that match. It’s easy to see us compete together where we uplift one another to reach an end goal of victory…. But to see first hand at Owen standing on his own two feet with all eyes on him, waiting to see what he can do solo after us being successful in defending our tag titles at every chance…. it was breathtaking, man. Truly a masterclass from our boy, Owen out there.” Kevin smirks and pats Owen on the back.
“You see, it is that common respect for one another that allows us to believe in you two so well. These biker twats that are gunning for you again, will be disposed of without prejudice, we have no doubt…. but for the less educated on the matter, what do you plan to do differently this time around with them? You know they’ve changed their game plan.” Lamarche runs his fingers through his grizzled beard.
“As I said before, Owen has proven just how much of a drive he has in him…. as for me, come on Lamarche, you know I didn’t make it this far in my career by giving away all my secrets. I’ll tell you this though, those two clowns are going to be defeated in record time, because our hunt is about TRUE COMPETITION, not rehashing fights that the fans have already seen.”
Owen responds as well. “The hunt is real, Lamarche. It’s not some catchy catchphrase that we say on camera. Kevin once told me that iron sharpens iron and he isn’t wrong. We will continue to grow on our path and we will continue to uplift one another on the way along with the rest of The New Brotherhood.”
Lamarche raises his right hand. “I get it and your success is obviously our success as well. You have our entire commune backing you, my friends.”
“Be it the Punishers or some random thrown together team like Odin and Cedrone…. The New Brotherhood is bringing Betterment to the tag division and the entire industry. Our mission will be fulfilled…”
Lamarche stops stroking his beard before beginning to speak again. “And outside of the industry? I know of your son, Kevin…. That can’t be easy, my friend.”
Kevin lowers his head slightly. “It has not been easy, you’re right…. I’ve chased down every possible lead and I’ve come off with squat…. but I just gotta stay strong for my wife and my son, you know?”
Lamarche nods. “If you have a few minutes, I’d love to talk to you about a few potential leads that one of my men may have come across…”
Kevin looks to Owen. “Yeah, you definitely gotta look into that. I’m going to take a look around here to see what our help has done for these fine folks.”
Kevin nods and looks to Lamarche. “Lead the way, sir.
“I can sense that you are drawn to this place just as much as me, my friend.” Owen pulls his coat closed.
