Hey folks, narrator here back once again! Yes, it’s the long awaited return of the Gentliest tag team to ever Gent, it’s the…Gents!
Apparently so! Anyway the Gents, plural, are in Mexico today! They’re there on a much needed break together after months of turmoil. Naturally, it’s also a trip where they are launching a new flavor of Gentcone specifically marketed towards Mexico, and so they’re at a restaurant where the owners are more than happy to host them. Teo and Andre are sitting at the table while the restaurant’s owners Rui and Rosa tell them all about their restaurant.
“You see,” Rosa continues “All this around here?” She motions to the restaurant "We built, together. This place has been our labor of love, our hijo. We’ve worked for 30 years to build it to what it is now. Rui wanted to travel the world, and someday we might do that, but not while we run this place."
“It’s a symbol of our marriage,” Rui takes over. “When we got together neither of us had anything. But together we built this and I know it’ll last forever because it has the strongest foundations, we have made sacrifices to each other and to this. But you know? It’s all worth it because I get to spend my days with my beautiful wife and when you get to do that? It’s not really work any more.”
“It’s wonderful, the only regret we ever had is when it’s time to retire together, what happens to this place? I’d hate that it ended up in the hands of some corporation or worse, just left, neglected. I don’t know.”
“Anyway, we have a good few years left in us yet darling,” Says Rui, squeezing Rosa’s hand and beaming a big smile at the lads. “But let us feed you tonight! No need to order, we’re giving you the chef’s special - a big chilli, straight from the pot, it’s been cooking for hours. Our secret recipe.”
Jenson looks on in awe as they leave. He looks at Teo, as if he's looking at the fountain of all knowledge. He knows little about Mexico and Mexican culture.
“Is this how all Mexican couples are? Because the only time I’ve ever seen a Mexican couple working together, well I don’t get the vibe I get when I look at Rui and Rosa.”
“You mean Vandalia and Vicente don’t you?”
“You know me so well!
I mean I didn't have the best family life growing up, so I’ve not seen a happy couple like this, Vandalia and Vincenzo don’t seem like the type who are like this either.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like, it’s hard to put a finger on it, but they don’t seem to me like they would sacrifice themselves, or their goals for the other. Look at Rui and Rosa, they are super happy, they’ve sacrificed a lot to make their shared dream a success. They sacrificed money, holidays together, their own dreams, hell they even sacrificed having children so they could have this shared thing together. I think it’s just absolutely amazing. Having that bond between two people can create a great thing out of nothing. Having that connection based on mutual respect and love is more powerful than anything you can think of - a good team can take on the world where an individual would crumble.
This is why we work so well, we have that mutual respect and love of one another. Like brothers!
I’m not sure Vandalia and Vincente really have that y’know? I think they got the love down, I have no doubt about that. But mutual respect? I’m not too sure about that.
Look at Rosa and Rui, look at how they give each other a chance to shine, look at how whenever the other talks or does anything they are engaged and want to hear what they say. Look how supportive they are when they are working - perfect teamwork and synergy. It’s how it should be.
You wouldn’t see Vincente sacrifice his goals to help build a vision for the future together.”
Teo nods as he takes a bite of tortilla, considering the wisdom in his partner’s words. “You know, I have to admit, you’ve got a point. I mean Vicente has been finding success- if you want to call a couple of stolen victories success- since reuniting with his lover, but I can’t help but draw attention to that word- reunite.
One need only look at their paths to see it, after all. Vandalia left to NBW to pursue a singles career while Lazaro treaded water, obsessed with his city of gold!”
“Right, the Cruiserweight Championship, or El Dorado.”
“I saw it when I faced him before- he’s so focused and determined on that one goal, he sees only himself holding that belt high over his head! That he can’t bring himself to focus on anything else.”
“So you think he cares more about that title than he does his Desert Rose?”
“I’ve seen no evidence to the contrary. Oh sure, he’ll claim to care deeply about his familia, he’ll include them in his career and tell them stories of his successes, but at the end of the day, Lazaro is a man with gold in his eyes, and every time that he stumbles, every time that he fails to reach that goal and grasp that treasure, he gets a little bit further from those he cares about.”
“You should know, you are the one who kept him from winning it after all.”
Jenson pours more Horchata from the pitcher as Teo considers his point.
“It’s true, I defeated Vicente once before- his naivete was on full display in that match- but this is a different situation. He’s got his mamacita to temper his worst failings, after all, maybe even to keep his tunnel vision in check.
Buuuut-”
Jenson nods, knowing exactly what his partner is about to say.
“But being a great team takes more than covering for your partner’s weaknesses.”
“I couldn’t have said it better myself. I just don’t see these two being able to put aside their singles ambitions for each other, not when it comes right down to it. Hell, I bet Lazaro would toss Vandalia right over the top rope in Cruiserhavoc if it meant getting closer to that Cruiserweight title, and while I hate to bring personal lives into it, Vandalia has already shown that she will put her own ambitions ahead of her lover’s! She spent years apart pursuing a dream without him!”
“Personal or not, you have a point there.”
“Vandalia may have experience, she may know and love Vicente, but the simple fact is that the chemistry just isn’t there yet. The biggest win they’ve had as a couple was barely stolen from Aphriya Adler in a glorified handicap match!”
“And look right there- the cracks are plain as day! Vandalia was willing to cheat to give Vicente a victory he did not earn. They’ve demonstrated without hesitation how they’re willing to take a tainted victory, a hollow win!”
“Well spoken, buddy!”
“And thus the Gents are the perfect team to expose their weaknesses. I mean think about it, what is the most important element in tag team wrestling?”
“Trust.”
“Exactly. You have to both be willing to know that the other person in that ring has your back no matter what, that you know that person will always be there for you!”
“And that is something which Vicente can simply not rely on when it comes to his Desert Rose, because they have both demonstrated to the world that they cannot be trusted!
But the hand has been overplayed- they’re walking into this match with the Two Gents. THE Team in Action Wrestling. We are the standard, the bar, the table, we are the team that redefined Tag Team Wrestling for Cruiserclash!”
“And unlike these two, we’ve never had to cheat to earn those accolades. And what’s more, we’ve never abandoned each other, even in our darkest moments, when everything seemed strained and tested our friendship to its limits? That’s the Gents, isn’t it? Rain or shine, hardship or glory, we’ll always be there for each other, no matter what.”
Teo and Jenson reach across the table with a fist bump, laughing over their meal in the warm Mexico sun.
“No matter what.”
