Failure… The word hangs in the air…
“We had it,dad… We should’ve won that game!”
“Mija, I know, you fought hard to get to that Championship game…”
“It’s just not fair!”
“Losses came, mija, but it makes the victory that much sweeter. Who doesn’t like a good comeback story? You girls fought hard to get to that Championship game and the other team had your number, I know that feeling all too well… But this is the moment you brush yourself off, you focus your shot again, and you shoot again. You know your skills and your never say die attitude is what got you there and it’ll get you there again. Next time, you’ll have a better understanding of what that feeling of loss feels like and you’ll dig deeper to succeed.”
Mija’s head still droops.
“Our familia is made up of fighters, your cousin Paco aside… Mi padre and his padre before him, all carried this family on their back, showing us all what hard work and determination can give you if you dig deep enough. They built our familia around that belief and they built us up with lucha. You hear me speak of those who came before us and how just like they built up the familia, I am trying to do the same. I’m not asking for you to go out there and win every single time, I want you to stay hungry and I want you to know when a win is a win. Sometimes our failures help us see it clearer and that is what I’m hoping you take away from that Championship game, mija.”
“I’ll try poppy…”
“That’s all I can ask of you, mija…”
I ruffle her hair and she kills me with a smile.
“Head inside and see if you can help your abuela with dinner.”
Mija runs off inside and I turn my attention to that ever present camera.
“A little parenting, no worries Serenity and Zara, I’m sure your padres did the best they could for you too… I suppose looking at mija’s game and seeing the parallels between your failures to knock off Teo, seem to weave perfectly, don’t they? You see there’s a difference here, Serenity, where your father would scream at you and demand you to be more RELENTLESS, which you can see where that got you… I’m wanting my daughter to learn from her failure to better herself. We take punches in this life, no one is perfect, not even The Golden Idolo, puta. I failed against Teo as well, but it didn’t stop me from continuing my path to mi El Dorado. You think I haven’t been watching every single match that Teo has been in since I lost to him? I’ve studied him and I’ve studied you too. I'm still pushing and there's not a damn thing that you or Zara can do to stop me, because I have a drive stronger than the both of you. I take my hits and I keep going… I take on those barriers that have been placed before me and I keep moving past them. Lucha will be represented and just as I lift mi familia up, I will make LUCHA a focus on Cruiserclash as I climb to mi Road to El Dorado."
I spread my arms toward the camera.
"Beat me beyond my limits, putas and I'll still rise… You will learn thar I am Cruiserclash and I am LUCHA. Zara, you may feel a bit unincluded here, but you're truly not important here. You're a spot filler to hold over the fans until Serenity and I can tear each other apart to see who gets another crack at Teo. Play your part, but don't stretch further than your means, because it won't be good enough. He'll, Zara, my mija has more fight in her than you do and she's a future champion from a pedigree of hard working luchas… What do you have?"
A smirk crosses my lips.
"I suppose we will see at Cruiserclash, puta."
We fade to black.
