ONE HOUR LATER Devil’s Hook Nightclub 6:29 PM Alpha Sierzant is pacing back and forth in front of the entrance with a very small line leading into the building. He’s muttering to himself but it isn’t discernable what he’s saying. As he has his internal conflict Cherry Vega walks up casually and recognizes him and interrupts his thought process. “Uh, you’re Alpha right? What’re you doing here?” He jumps and whispers ‘fuck’ to himself as he turns to face Cherry and starts rubbing the back of his neck. There’s visible sweat going down his forehead and Cherry notices this. “Wait- You’re not here to see Alice are you? I’m pretty sure she just got back from her Loudwire interview. She’s probably tired, bud.” “Yeah… I just wanted to uh, see if it went well. I didn’t get a chance to listen to it on the radio so I wanted to uh, ask her about it! Just, caring for a good friend ya know? Cherry squints her eyes and cocks her head and puts her hands on her hips. “You fucking have a crush on her don’t you!” Alpha starts frantically looking around. “What?! Pfft, no I just wanted to check on her…” “YOU DO! She doesn’t like dudes, you do know that right?” “Well-” The sound of a car door slamming from the side of the building echoes through both their ears making them snap their heads in that direction. Alice had just gotten home and she has both of her hands clasped behind her head as she looked to the sky with her eyes closed. “Alice!””Alice!” Alpha and Cherry both shout at the same time. Alice opens her eyes and notices the both of them and puts her arms down as she walks up to them. “What’re you guys doin’ here? Come to congratulate me on my first major interview? I’m tired so I’m not really in the mood for partying. Wait, Remy isn’t here so it can’t be that. What’s up?” Cherry leans over to Alpha and whispers “Told ya”. Alpha scoots away from Cherry but can’t seem to get any words out after. “Well? Either of you gonna answer me?” Alice says irritated. Cherry smiles and lightly pats Alpha on the back of his shoulder and almost starts skipping to stand next to Alice. “Well, Alpha over here has been waiting for you to get back! He apparently has something important to tell you.” Alice looks directly into Alpha’s eye even though he keeps trying to divert his gaze anywhere else but towards her. “How do I say this? Alice… I- I’m sorry… Kalina is in the hospital after a botched sale. Remy’s waiting for us there, I figured you’d want to see her just in case anything happens. The doctors said it’s a 50/50 shot of her making it out of the hospital.” Alice and Cherry’s faces drop. “W-what? No no no. That- no.” Alice stumbles for a moment but then she grabs Cherry’s wrist and starts dragging her back towards her car. “Let’s go, Alpha! We have to go!” “Alright. I’ll meet you there!” Alpha takes off sprinting towards the parking lot in the opposite direction. Alice jumps into the driver seat and sits there staring at the wheel without a single blink. Cherry watches on in complete concern as her best friend is on the brink of a breakdown. Alice starts slamming the wheel with her palms and starts screaming. Cherry doesn’t say a single word and gives her space to let it out. She puts the car in drive and takes off and the entire drive is met with complete silence. Alice slides into a parking spot and gets out of the car as fast as she can with Cherry a few steps behind her. Alice walks up to the receptionist and asks to see Kalina Gniewick. She’s told the room number and she walks as fast as she can towards the elevator. The two women wait as the elevator lifts them up. Alice starts to break down with the wait and Cherry gives her a massive comforting hug right before the elevator doors open. They let go of each other and Alice inhales deeply with a soft exhale. They head over to Kalina’s room which is marked room 66. She knocks on the door twice and then opens it to the sight of Remy sitting in a chair on the side of the bed with his elbows on his knees and his face in his hands. Kalina lies in the bed with an IV in her arm and tubes going into her nose. The room is quiet other than the sound of her heart monitor beeping slowly. Remy looks up and hastily jumps to his feet and with a very serious look on his face for the first time that Alice has ever seen. He immediately gives her a hug. She feels a slight tremble through Remy’s body. “It was my fault, Alice… I’m so fucking stupid. If she dies because of me…” “Don’t say that Remy. Do not.” They break away from each other so Alice can go sit next to her in the chair. Alpha walks in the room and notices Alice sitting down next to her and looks at Remy who has tears in his eyes. Alice grabs Kalina’s hand and places it in between both of hers. “Kalina, if you can hear me I want you to know that I’m right here ok? I’m not going to leave you until you’re ready to leave this place. You’re going to walk out of here with me, I know you will.” Alice leans in and places her head on Kalina’s shoulder. “I love you… please don’t leave me.” Life is for the living.
