“Downfall. Dionysus. Carter Shaw. Johnny Bacchus.”
The names escaped my lips quickly, like they carried venom I wished to rid from my body. I had some history with each of them. Well, except for one. Johnny Bacchus. Of course, we were hardly strangers. You didn’t make it far in Action Wrestling without at least accepting what Johnny had meant to the company at large. I was certain he had never liked me, which is usually a fair assumption with anyone, when it comes to me. I’m sure my recent…alliance with Regan Voorhees didn’t help any.
Then again, when has that ever mattered?
“You know, it’s kind of funny seeing this team put together. Sure, my side isn’t a model of cohesion either, save for Regan and myself, of course. But you’ve got the former World Champion, Downfall. That’s very suitable. No matter how high he flies, you can always count on him crashing back down into reality. He went through an absolute tear through the Wrestler of the Year tournament, and then continued on it by defeating Dandy DiVito for the World Title on January 3rd. What happened, Daniel?
I’m sure everyone knows what happened.
Affluenza happened. We undermined your reign since the beginning. Everything went according to plan. Well, almost everything. Your partner, Dionysus? How much help was he? Oh, he tried valiantly, didn’t he? Maybe it’s time he realizes that in Vanguard he is #2, and maybe that ridding himself of you will finally get him over the hump you’ve placed before him.”
The moment got to me. Remembering the submission match with Carter Shaw. That, despite our MANY insistences that the match absolutely would end in a submission, Shaw was gifted a win.
“Carter Shaw…
You are the first person to defeat me in a submission match.”
On a technicality. You can say all you want that you would have “killed” me. But we both know that's hyperbole. I may have been knocked out, but the fact remains that the decision by that referee flew directly in the face of the contract YOU proposed. The match YOU wanted. You may have won on paper, but in no way did you ‘beat’ me.
And then there’s Johnny Bacchus.”
A pause. I’ve been waiting a long time to stand across the ring from Bacchus. Not out of respect, mind you. What a world we would live in if Jill Park grew to respect anyone out of her circle. No, there were ulterior reasons for it.
“Obnoxious Johnny Bacchus. Toon World. Whatever other hipster commie bullshit monikers he wants to employ at this stage. It’s really interesting to see Johnny Bacchus back in action. And what does he do on night one of his return to Action Wrestling?
The exact same thing he spent months campaigning against. The same thing he SLAMMED men like Corey Black and Spencer Adams for doing. Inserting himself DIRECTLY into the World Title picture. How obscenely predictable, Johnny. I-“
I heard a voice away from my camera. I recognized the voice of one of my producers instantly. What they said was…jarring.
“What?”
“God damned snakes.”
The 60 inch HDTV in my main living room displayed the crazy TMZ headline.
“Pro-Wrestler and Reality Star Jill Park with mystery celeb beau?”
They had nothing, naturally. They’d prodded at me for about as long as I’ve been known to the world. Like so many that target me, they were grasping at straws.
It was enraging, none the less.
“Get on it.” I barked at my publicist, who quivered under her thick glasses before storming out of the room. We were too close for any of these accusations to take attention away from Affluenza. I shot a text to Regan to inform her of both the issue and of the response. She replied with a thumbs up emoji, which was about all I could expect to get from the correspondence with her.
I then dialled his phone number. He didn’t answer, how typical. I hated leaving voicemails.
“They know.”
