Roddy walks out of the optometrist with his Raybans back over his face. He tosses the results to the ground and walks right past Doc.
Doc puts his phone away as they walk back to the limo.
“Have we gotten any news back from the mayor?”
“He’s still working on giving us a lead on the Governor and Senator, but as of right now, no.”
Doc looks nervous, like he wants to ask about something.
Roddy doesn’t give him a chance.
They reach the limousine. The driver opens the back door, letting Doc get in. Roddy starts to enter, but stops as he sees something across the street.
No.
SomeONE.
“Minami.”
Roddy shuts the door. Doc tries to say something again before it closes, but the double tap on the roof is enough for the driver to do his job.
Roddy takes his Raybans off and stuffs them in his ve—
The two sit on the bench in the park nearby.
“So…what’s going on with you?”
It was asked so nonchalantly.
Like two friends just…meeting up.
Roddy’s scowl deepens as he fiddles with his Raybans.
“Well I’m in a match with a rookie after finding myself fighting for the Cruiserweight Title. I’ve seemingly been pushed out of contention for both titles by Bunga even though I’ve done everything I can to ingratiate myself to him. Apparently Andre Jenson, the literal punching bag and pinfall taker for TwoGents, gets a title match before me.
Oh, and I’m facing some person named Salem.
Oh, right, plus my Doc and the eye doc think I’m crazy because my left eye turned blue.
You know, typical shit for a guy on the cusp of taking over a state.”
“It was rhetorical.”
“Well then specify that shit. I can ramble all day about destiny and taking over the world, but it doesn’t mean a me-damn thing if people aren’t willing to get behind it. Salem is a newbie, a rookie, they’re green, but Bunga thinks this is the right fit for me?
For ME?
The Young Dynasty?
I’m better than this. I just fought at Revolution for a title while Kit was forced out of hers, but here I am being reduced to matches against lower talent. And don’t get it wrong, this is exactly what it is. I’m sure Salem is in some way a good performer, but there isn’t anybody better on the B show than me.
They showed up in CruiserHavoc and was promptly tossed out. That is pretty indicative of their status on the show.
You want MY two cents?
This is just Bunga’s way of saying thank you for being such a team player. I inevitably beat Salem, I’m going to be right back where I was and on the road to where I’m meant to be.”
“Holy shit, I don’t care.”
Roddy growls and turn towards Minami.
“Well then quit stalling and tell me why you’re here!”
“That. That is why I’m here.”
She points to his left eye.
“Shit!”
Roddy blinks and it’s gone, but that doesn’t stop him from putting the Raybans back on.
“You’ve been around her too long. You’re becoming a part of what’s happening to her.”
“Yeah, and? We work. We’re successful. You want me to just stop seeing her? Something tells me that won’t end well for me.”
“Of course I want you to stop seeing her! I wish everybody on this goddamn globe could stop seeing her! I wish every day that she would just disappear so that nobody has to deal with whatever she is anymore! But we can’t have that! So we’re stuck with what we DO have, and what YOU have, is an opportunity to step away, resume your life and your ‘destiny’” peep the air quotes “without having to worry about flames, or blowing up schools, or finding yourself in a room of clocks.”
“You know about the room of clocks?”
“Yes! I’ve been seeing the same shit you have since Hideyo—”
She cuts herself off.
“Look…things need to change, and if that means ditching her, than so be it.”
She stands up and walks away.
Leaving Roddy alone in the park with a scowl on his face.
