Holden and Joey spent the evening in a dive bar in Boston that Joey knew about. Even with the liquid courage, locals kept their yaps shut when they arrived with Joey sporting his Yankees hoodie. They have no doubt that the handful of regulars in this dive joint would love to get their hands on the duo but their balls are too small and all the liquid courage in the World won’t get em to act on it.
They stayed till nearly two in the morning and then caught an Uber back to the hotel. This morning, when Holden headed to the airport, for a quick flight back to New York, he knocked on Joey’s door but could hear him snoring clear out here in the hall. He checked out and a few hours later was back in his cramped, but homey, apartment. It might be small but it’s only a handful of blocks from his other place of employment, the Velvet Rabbit.
He has an appointment this evening with Jade Riley at the Velvet Rabbit Gentlemen’s Club for a quick interview concerning GRINDHOUSE’s upcoming match at Revolution Five. He and Joey weren’t supposed to be successful outside of the Hardcore division, Holden is sure of it, but look at them now.
He sits on his couch, the only piece of furniture in the room, save for the Murphy bed which is tucked away in what looks like a grand armoire. On his lap is an old wooden tray, that he picked up somewhere, and on that tray is a small pile of ground up marijuana and to blunt wraps. He spends the next ten minutes rolling the blunts to perfection before placing the tray back under the couch, where he stores it.
His phone rings and he sees the caller id is telling him it’s Courtney, from Bakersfield. The right corner of his mouth curls into a smirk as he answers the phone. “I wonder if she saw my match?” he thinks to himself.
”Hey, you, what’s the good word?” he asks, a smile in his voice.
”I just wanted to say congratulations! I watched Clash last night. What in the Hell was that move you guys won the match with?”
Holden chuckles. ”You liked that, huh? It’s called the ‘Double Dragon Double Suplex.’ I saw it done years ago by a British wrestler. Pretty sick, huh?” he beams.
”It was. I popped for it… But, hey man, I gotta go. Just wanted to say hi and tell ya congratulations. You coming back out this way anytime soon? she asks. Was that the sound of hope in her voice?
He grins. ”I’ll be out that way in a couple weeks. Maybe I’ll take you out to dinner…whatcha think?” Now, was that hope in his voice?
”Sounds like a great idea. I’ll think of a place we can go. Cool? she is smiling ear-to-ear and it comes through in her voice. ”Talk to ya soon, Holden.”
”Good, take care…” Holden hangs up the call and finds himself grinning like a dumb kid and brings himself back to the now and fires up one of the blunts.
Later that day….
Cameras open inside what appears to be a “Gentlemen’s Club” and as they pan to the right the come to rest on Holden and Jade. They sit across from each other in deep red, velvet high back chairs with a small table between them. They each have a drink in front of them; Jade appears to have water and Holden and a tumbler filled with a large, round ball of us and clear liquid.
”Glad to see you, Holden, how are you doing?” Jade asks with a smile. Holden takes a sip of his drink and grins back at her.
”Doin pretty good; I got two dream jobs and, at one of em, I’m fighting for a shot at the World Tag Team Championship! Can’t ask for much more, could ya?” he replies and waves to someone off camera.
”I wanted to talk to you about that. You face Bentley Unlimited this week and last night your partner, Joey Scala, aired his thoughts. You want to expand upon them?” she asks and takes a sip of her water.
”He bought said it all, didn’t he? Bentley Unlimited have been pretty much nonexistent around here while we have been grinding it out. I have never been pinned since joining this company and that’s not changing this week. Not at the hands of these two chumps.
I was once considered one of the most violent men in the ring. I nearly split a man’s skull in two with an ace handle to win a match. In another, I threw a woman out of the ring and through a barbed wire wrapped table. These two spoiled puto’s aren’t made to go the distance. They aren’t willing to do whatever it takes to get the win.
They’re from uptown and we are from the gutter. They’re soft, like marshmallows and we, GRINDHOUSE, have been hardened by the brutality of this World. Let me ask you two a question; which do you find more exhilarating, pain or pleasure? Me, personally, I prefer pain. I will enjoy making the two of you bleed. And I will enjoy making you enjoy it.” he takes another sip from his glass.
”Sounds like you are pretty confident you’re going to win but, you have to remember, they have been a team for a lot longer than you and Joey and they have the added benefit of their manager at ringside.” Holden cuts her off.
”The last time these two fools got in the ring it was against the whipping boy, Mason Jones and another over glorified jobber. GRINDHOUSE are going to be the next Tag Champs. These two are just a pit stop on our road to the belts. That’s it.” Holden pounds the rest of his drink. ”We done?” he grins.
We fade to black…
