“Who’s this?” Kidsgrove asks in annoyance, the sweat dripping from every part of his body as the punching bag still swings from the ceiling.
“The fuck is the Challenge? Know what? Just don’t answer. Not interested, don’t call my phone again, if my agent is ducking your call then you clearly aren’t worth my time.”
He ends the call angrily and tosses his phone into his gym bag, then goes back to work on the punching bag. He is ultra aggressive, hitting it with all of his power over and over again, the bag creaks as if it’s going to break like it’s in pain. Visceral grunts come from Kidsgrove as he lays into it. His workout music (Currently playing Boom by POD) is reduced in volume as Zooey saunters into the room. She takes a look at Kidsgrove, then sits down on the bench nearby. She grabs a protein shake just in time for the alarm on Kidsgrove’s phone to go off. She hands it to him as he stops and he takes it with a grunt of thanks.
“You printed it off?” She asked, slightly amused, while she looks at a piece of paper.
“Extra motivation” he replies.
“Not that you need it right now, you’ve been in a foul mood all week.”
“Yeah. Sorry.”
“What’s up?”
“I thought I’d never be in this position, that’s all. “
“Oh?” She’s interested as she reads the tweet again. “You’ve been threatened before.”
“Nah, that’s helping. If she’s dumb enough to poke the bear in public with shit like that then it gives me the motivation to try that little harder to put her in her place. Hard to believe she’s supposed to be a role model. You know people call me the bad guy right? Then you got her tweeting out stuff like this when you haven’t been in the same room for like 3 years. It’s laughable.
So yeah, despite the fact she’s a piece of work, despite the fact she’s apparently been holding a grudge for not being able to beat me for the International title, despite everything she’s actually done for the past 3 years, she’s apparently a hero and I’m a villain. Yeah the world is mental.”
“So you’re annoyed because people are people? That’s not like you at all.”
“No. I’m just annoyed because that’s the state of mind I have to be in for this fight.”
“Erm, OK, why? Don’t you normally say every fight is just the same as the last one, if you prepare any differently it’s taking you out of your zone and will cause disruption?”
Kidsgrove points at Zooey as he swigs his protein shake.
“You do listen! Yeah, normally. Do me a favour though, go to any one of her social media accounts, Insta, Twitter, whatever. Just not her Only Fans, I assume she has one of those. Tell me what you see.”
Zooey flicks to Lissie’s twitter page.
“What am I looking for?”
“Any tweet, just click on a random couple and check out the comments.”
Zooey does this as Kidsgrove starts to punch the bag again. She reads through for a good 5 minutes, slowly it dawns on her and let’s out an “ooooooooh”. Kidsgrove stops punching and looks down to her.
“Yeah, right! Exactly. She’s a goddamn hero to all those women, all those kids, all those simps. Add to that we’re in her yard. Houston is home to her. I’m going into the lion’s den, it’ll be the most hostile environment you’ll ever hear. The hometown hero, who’s spent all week riling up the crowd with inflammatory comments like this, she’s manipulating her fans so she can have 20,000 people in that arena baying for blood, my blood. 20,000 Texans who are *this* close to getting in the ring and ending me themselves. I’m going to walk out there in an atmosphere no one can be ready for. Not without getting in the right frame of mind.
Add to that you got a crazy woman across the ring who’s been wanting to avenge a random loss for 3 whole years, which ate her up inside and turned her into a bitter, vindictive, self absorbed child and you’ve got yourself a situation.
Don’t get me wrong, even if she didn’t have a highly illogical desire to gain retribution in what was a run of the mill title defence, this would still be a huge match. We’re talking two Superstars of this organisation, two Hall of Fame competitors facing each other for the first time in years. We’re talking about two people who never give up, who will go the distance and fight until there is nothing left.
On one hand, I admire her, she’s been through it all, the highest highs and the lowest lows and nothing has managed to put her down for the count yet. She’s come back from more than most people ever have and, well that changes people. Hell it changed me, but you know this is where she and I are absolutely different. That’s where the other hand comes in.
I took it as a sign that I should look after my friends and family, that I should protect the vulnerable and the scared. I changed myself for the better after looking into the light of death and returning, took a new path and I’m the better person for it.
Lissie? Well she just became more and more unstable. She’s constantly hanging on by a thread to her sanity, she’s bouncing between people who she thinks will help her heal that dark place in her soul and consistently finding herself disappointed. I’m not going to reel off the names of people she hitched her waggon to to find herself, mostly because it’s a long list and my memory isn’t good enough to name everyone, but it’s a veritable who’s who of saps and manipulating bastards.
I hope her latest bout of therapy might help her realise that no matter which person or shady cult she hitches herself to, she won’t fill that void in her soul that her brother left.
Mostly because there isn’t a void.
Death hurts, it stinks. The person who you love most in your life leaving you is hard, it’s a tragedy, it’s something that will always be there and you will change because of it. The empty void you feel in your soul isn’t really an empty void at all. It’s the essence of that person, their imprint. All you gotta do to fill that void is to accept that into your life, accept the memory of your loved one and that memory will fill that void and make you whole again. The reason she can’t fix it with other people is because that space is already reserved for Robbie.
Granted, she’s the most bi-polar person in the whole federation, so it will terrify her to accept this, she’s more than happy to go through her highs and lows, sometimes elevating, but mostly destroying those around her. It seems like one day she’s in a good mood, trying to be a role model and a hero to everyone and the next she’s creepily recruiting women to sadistic cults that apparently she doesn’t believe in.
That’s another reason I gotta go in with the right mindset, this is game time. It’s not just for me, it’s not just for you, Kat didn’t get the chance to confront Lissie about that and by the time Lissie sorted her shit out with Philador, Kat had to go home. So this is also for Kat, who might never get the chance to straighten up and banish those demons.
That being said, with the prospect of a hardcore match, in my opponents hometown, against the golden girl of AW who can seemingly do no wrong, who’s antagonised the fan base to be positively vitriolic, I’ve gotta hit that place I never wanted to go back to.
I’ve got to tap into the Hollywood Elite Sam Kidsgrove. I’ve gotta tap into the Sam Kidsgrove that could take on the world and really cause damage. I’ve got to forget respect for the night, take off the shackles and throw down Shadowlove style. This is the mindset I’m aiming for. I’m going into Houston with a massive target on my back and for the first time in a long time I’m not going to hear the fan support. So ruthless is the name of the game.”
“I don’t know, like you said, she’s been through a lot.”
“We all have. Nearly losing Emily and me almost turned you into something you’re not, right?”
“Yeah I guess. It was a dark time.”
“And to get over that you learned to channel the anger and hatred, then got training so things like that wouldn’t happen again.”
“Yeah.”
“So you looked at the bottom of the pit and you decided to walk away from the edge and vow it won’t happen again. You’re not likely to repeat the same mistake and you’re better equipped now to deal with anything. You have fortitude. Lissie is doomed to repeat the same spin cycle of finding someone to help her belong, realising it didn’t do what she wanted, betraying or being betrayed by them, having a massive blow up, restarting her life, finding someone to help her belong. Etcetera etcetera. The infinite loop that is groundhog day Lissie arcs of shallowly repeating the same mistakes over and over again just keeps going and going.
The cycle needs to be broken. Problem is I don’t think it will ever be. She’s not going to find her Andie MacDowell and we all know this latest round of therapy is just another waggon, I’m just waiting for her to throw down with her psychotherapist or something because she’s feeling like she’s making too much progress and as soon as she wins her US title trinket, that’ll resolve everything as if wearing a piece of gold around her waist is the way to complete and validate her life, fixing her broken self.
When we all know the only reason she’s going for this is because she thinks it’s easier than winning the thing she *does* want, after all. Why go after the likes of Downfall, Dandy and Regan, getting your ass handed to you when you can face lil’ old me and CJ instead? I guess she could hold this title for a week and be beaten by one of us as well. After all she is groundhog day Lissie.
However, her going for the US title is a problem, because that US title actually means something to me. It is still the beacon of hope for millions of people around the world. It’s being held right now quite admirably by CJ who’s becoming more and more comfortable in his role by the week. This is good, we like competition, we like people being at the top of their game and showing the world talent and hard work gets rewarded in this division.
What we desperately have to avoid is someone like Lissie getting that title again and allowing the division to be represented by a self absorbed neurotic mess, who’s only reason for holding the title is to unsuccessfully make her feel better about something only she can fix. We don’t want it to be dragged into the depths of misery and self loathing, it’s the exact opposite of what it stands for. The title needs to mean something, to give people inspiration. It needs to show the world that we are here to give them an out, there are people here who can help them.
It needs to give them real Hope.
Not Lissie Hope.”
His alarm goes off, he kisses Zooey, clenches his jaw and turns back to the punching bag, hitting it even harder…
“It’s Craig, from MTV. Your agent wasn’t available so I figured I’d call you directly. We’re recruiting for the next season of the Challenge. Are.....”
“The fuck is the Challenge? Know what? Just don’t answer. Not interested, don’t call my phone again, if my agent is ducking your call then you clearly aren’t worth my time.”
He ends the call angrily and tosses his phone into his gym bag, then goes back to work on the punching bag.
