“The secret to success is failure.”
The words hang in the air, strange, paradoxical even.
“Don’t worry, I’ll explain.”
The man speaking is instantly recognizable, all the way from his red glasses to his bright Reeboks.
“That’s what drives both of them. They just haven’t figured it out yet. Loss? Defeat? It hardens us. Sharpens us. It makes us want more. We push ourselves hardest when we know what it’s like to fail.
Take Karlie Nash. The hardest working woman on Cruiserclash. To call her anything else would be an insult- she has endured more failure than anyone on this roster. She’s been uncharacteristically complimentary to yours truly, but Karlie Nash is still Karlie Nash.
She’s a vile, manipulative snake of a human being, a spin doctor in sheep’s clothing. Playing the pity card one moment and claiming to be an icon seconds later. It’s a clever game.
But Karlie Nash is still Karlie Nash.
And if we want to talk a passion play, why not turn to our dear Gatecrasher? The man in the midst of a career renaissance, if we’re to be believed.
Don’t make me laugh.”
As if to punctuate the statement, Teo’s face curls into a grin.
“Void, your inherent, constant flaw is a perpetual jealousy. It’s what you have to tell yourself. That you are overlooked, underappreciated. Even with that belt around your shoulder you still speak like the underdog. Your first words as champion were bitter reflections on your past failures.
You don’t sound like a champion, Void. You sound like a fluke. Someone who got lucky and doesn't know what to do next.”
Teo sits down, cross legged on the sidewalk, placing his chin on his fist.
“That chip on your shoulders, both of you. I’ve seen it. It’s a powerful thing, no? Stronger than any performance enhancer. That feeling that you’ve been ignored, passed over. That anger, flame that wells up inside of you.
I say let it grow.
Get pissed.
We’ve all felt it, we’ve all wondered what would happen if we just let go, gave in. What is Karlie Nash capable of when she really cuts loose? Just how monstrous can Void really be?
It’s intoxicating to think you’re the hero. The passed over. The forgotten...But it’s not the truth, is it?”
Teo’s words grow hard as stone as he pops to his feet, the smile bigger than ever.
“Karlie Nash, you want us to feel sympathy for someone who has quietly accumulated more unearned title shots than anyone in the division. Not to mention the three or four tag belts that you’ve yet to defend. You treat title belts like baubles, trinkets. Participation trophies. You need that validation that comes with those straps, it’s an addiction.
And Void? You’d have us believe that you were passed over. Ignored. Forgotten by partners and fans alike. And you know what? You were forgotten.
Because you left.
The moment the Gatecrashers fell apart, you disappeared off the face of the planet. You were gone. You have the fucking balls to be bitter about a division you walked away from?
Grow the hell up. You may have that belt around your waist, but you still act like a rookie.”
Teo suddenly drops to his back, laying in the street as cars honk angrily around him.
“You both pulled off miracles in Cruiserhavoc. The fear of failure helped you survive. But that’s all it was. Survival.
And me? Well, I failed to win Cruiserhavoc, though I came damned close.
So guess what?
I’ve got that same anger.
I was robbed by a pair of entitled failures.
And you whiny brats are about to realize you’ve made the biggest mistake of your lives.
Overlooked? Forgotten? Hell, I’ll put you right in newspaper headlines- in the obituaries! Screw what you’re owed, and fuck what you’re entitled!
This belt is about what you earned.
And the beating, the pain I’m bringing both of you?
You earned it.
So when I reclaim my belt, when I expose you both as the pair of whiny brats you are?
You’ll have only yourselves to blame.
Another failure to fuel you. Something else to whine about.
And hey,
You're welcome.”
