Back at the Gray Belt Training Center in Durham, North Carolina, Jill Park strolls through the front doors with a new vigor. Unlike her first visit, she felt much more like this was the right move. Although her attitude may have changed slightly in that time, at least in regards to training, the rest of the staff and trainees likely had not forgotten her outburst from a couple weeks ago.
As Jill approached Eric Faulk’s office, she saw the door slightly ajar. She kept on towards the office, slowly pushing the door open and finding the office to be completely empty. It was at that moment that Eric must have noticed her arrival, as Jill could hear her name being yelled from about thirty feet away, by Eric. As she spun around she saw him in the ring, giving instruction to a large, hulking man in a singlet. Eric waved Jill in. Tossing her gym bag to the side, Jill nodded at her new trainer and rolled into the ring, staring a hole into the young man across from her, before switching her gaze back to Eric.
Eric seemed to be in a good mood as a bright smile lit up his features as he looked between two of his newer students. “Jill, this is Cameron Parker. Parker, this is Jill Park.”
Parker towered over Jill, being at least a foot taller and much heavier. However, he was excitable. He eagerly shot his right hand forward for a handshake. “Jill Park! Of course I know who Jill Park is! I’m such a huge fan, Miss Park!” Jill doesn’t seem nearly as eager to shake hands, saying “Great” under her breath as Parker proclaimed his fandom for the Reality Star/Wrestler. Eric definitely picks up on this, even if his starstruck student does not. After Jill receives a bit of a glare from Eric, she hesitantly shakes the young man’s hand, which brings a huge smile to his face.
“Okay, okay. Remember why we’re here, Parker.” The young trainee nods solemnly. Eric turns his attention back to Jill. “Parker is only a few months into his training, but he’s one of the best athletes I’ve ever trained. Between that and his size, he should give you plenty to work with.”
“Parker,” He continued, switching back to facing the larger man. “I assume you’ve got some idea what you’re up against.”
Parker’s excitement has reached an all time high, he proudly announces: “Oh absolutely! I loved your match at Spookyclash! You were amazing! It’s an honor to—” Faulk raises his hand, cutting Parker off.
“Focus, son. You’re her sparring partner, not some fanboy. If you wanna get better acquainted…” Eric points a remote at a nearby digital clock, with 5:00 appearing on the screen. “…you two have five minutes to get to know each other. Starting… NOW.” Eric then backs up a touch, giving his students the space they’ll need.
Jill is ready instantly, bouncing on the balls of her feet, while Parker doesn’t seem as engaged. He is practically standing there. Jill quickly stops, seeming annoyed by her opponent’s lack of energy. “What the fuck are you doing?” She shouts, which doesn’t appear to do anything but shake the young man’s confidence. He looks away for a brief second in embarrassment before Jill takes two steps forward and slaps him across the face. “You just gonna be a little cuck bitch, or are you gonna fight me?” She then turns her back to Parker entirely, facing Eric. “This is a waste of time. What a disgrace.” Before Eric can give her any sort of reply, Parker yells out at Jill, charging ahead and clobbering her from behind with a clothesline. Jill smashes to the canvas but quickly rolls over onto her back. She manages to pull herself up using the ring ropes but Parker is back on the offensive immediately. Parker scoops Jill up with ease, slamming her back down onto the canvas. Again, Jill rolls over to the ropes and pulls herself up. Parker charges her with time but a well placed boot knocks him back a step. It’s Jill’s time to charge now, but Parker catches her with a samoan drop that nearly shakes the ring! Parker is really feeling it now and shoves Jill’s head between his legs and pulls her up for a powerbomb, but Jill fires off a few right hands to his forward and then leaps from his shoulders, landing behind him.
To his credit, Parker quickly turns around, but he is caught right on the jaw by a leaping knee. This staggers him back and Jill forges ahead with a flurry of right and left punches and landing clean on his midsection. He tries to cover up, but just as he does, Jill blasts him with an elbow strike, again landing flush on the larger man’s jaw.
“Keep it together, Parker!” Eric yells out from the apron, but it seems to do little good as the young man is clearly overwhelmed and overmatched. He begins to panic and his legs betray him, buckling and sending him backwards into the ropes quickly, sending him back towards Jill, who with no hesitation leaps forward with her bicycle knee known as “Double Parked”, connecting flush again on the jaw of Parker. This doesn’t just stagger him, as he crumbles to the mat, landing on his face.
“TIME!” Eric shouts. Jill backs up a step but turns to see more than a minute still remaining. “No it’s not!” She complains, but Eric is too busy tending to Parker to immediately answer her. When he finally does turn back to Jill he points to the quivering mess of a man, now in the fetal position on the canvas. “He’s had enough for today.” He then crouches down to Parker again, with the young man finally sitting up. “Good work, Parker. We’ll go over what went down today, later.”
Parker, still trying to gain his bearing again, looks up to Jill. She isn’t nearly as supportive as Eric, clearly peeved he called the sparring session to a halt at all. “Yeah,” She says through a smirk. “Good job, kid.” Her tone was as sarcastic as it could be.
By this time, Eric had walked away from the ring, and was about ten feet away, standing in front of a mirrored wall. “Come over here,” He called to Jill. “We’ve got a lot to work on.”
“Pfft.” Jill spat in annoyance, as she stepped through the ropes and hopped off the apron. “Seriously? I just took this kid that you claim is the best athlete you’ve ever trained, and I turned him into a bumbling mess in under five minutes.”
Eric remains in front of the mirror, still waiting on Jill. “If all we did here was patronize you over what you did well, we’d be part of your little entourage. Now do you want to improve, or do you want me to prop up Cameron so he can worship you while you kick his ass some more?”
Jill didn’t appreciate the tone, but dropped her complaint regardless. Still seeming annoyed, she asked “What do you want to show me?”
Eric smiles lightly at what appeared to be Jill conceding on the point he is trying to make, despite her not knowing what that was.
“You made some mistakes and left some huge openings. Let’s not ignore them just because they haven’t been exploited yet. Now I want you to face the mirror and do the same motion you used to set up that Bicycle Knee you used to flatten Parker.”
Jill rolls her eyes HARD. She appeared to be in a weird spot in this training with Faulk. It seemed like she was both willing and unwilling at the same time. Luckily, Eric Faulk had an almost unending abundance of patience, and it showed as he allowed Jill to run through her faux outrage, as he knew what was lying beneath the surface: it was a much different story.
“Do you think I don’t watch my own matches back? Do you think I don’t PREPARE for my matches? I have seen HOURS of myself in the ring. I know what the hell I look like. Everyone wants to pack me into this tight little box but it ain’t the reality. It’s-”
Faulk raises his hand in an attempt to interrupt. “Woah. Hold on a minute, Jill. I’m not talking about that. This isn’t about the hard camera, or what the fans see. And it damn sure isn’t about the smoke and mirrors your MTV fans see. Look in the mirror, do the move, and see what your opponent sees.”
Jill seems disarmed, for the moment. Faulk knew this would be as good of an opportunity as he may get. “If nothing else, humour me. Set up, and do the move.”
After another roll of her eyes and a heavy sigh, Jill takes a step back. She leaps forward, executing “Double Parked” like she always would. As she backs up to repeat, Faulk places his right hand on her left shoulder, halting her. “Again. Really pay attention. Don’t get caught up in the performance, or in whatever experience you’re having. Take a look at the experience you’re giving.”
Jill stares straight ahead at the mirrored wall. She has a different look, more determined. She runs forward and throws the knee again. And again. And again.
“Alright, alright.” He says, allowing Jill a moment to stop and shift her gaze to meet his. “Now, what do you see?”
Jill takes a long pause, before another heavy sigh.[/color] “I throw my hands down. I look susceptible to an incoming strike, if I don’t connect first.”
Faulk folds his arms as he smiles in approval. “Looks that way. Let’s get to work. Do it again. See what they see, from start to finish. Every step of the run up, the jump, the impact, the form, all of it. Get intimately acquainted with every aspect. Because with the work we’re doing here…”
Jill continues, throwing several more bicycle knees to the mirror, searching her reflection for things she hadn’t--or couldn’t--have seen before.
“You’re gonna get to know yourself.”
As Jill approached Eric Faulk’s office, she saw the door slightly ajar. She kept on towards the office, slowly pushing the door open and finding the office to be completely empty.
