Katherine sat in front of her locker following a debut victory over Diego Tesoro. Overcome with emotion following a heartfelt video call with her parents back home in Britain, having stayed up late to watch their daughter's big moment; The English Rose was left a blubbering mess.
They were tears of joy though; the match had been gruelling, her ribs painful. Yet it was all worth it; Katherineβs experience that night had just been a taster for the business, and she wanted more.
Katherine began to undo her two plaits when her phone vibrated once again. She stopped unravelling her hair and picked up her phone; a smile spread across her face.
By god Diego brought it, and Iβm feeling like I was mowed down by a car - but I won my debut!
Words cannot express my excitement and utter sheer relief at this achievement. The look on Daddyβs face, he was so proud of me - and even Mother sounded rather chuffed.
However, itβll all mean nothing if I donβt follow up my debut victory with a second win. A lot of great looking talent has debuted here recently, including the Omega guys; I need another victory to keep up my momentum.
I must admit though, my heart dropped a little when I saw the card and discovered my next opponent: Clarence Hendricks. Not because Iβm scared of him, well maybe Iβm a little daunted - he survived nearly twenty-five years in prison, I know he can handle himself.
But I was down because I like him and I know he really badly needs a win.
Clarenceβs story is inspirational; his determination to turn a truly awful situation around and make a go of life is a testament to his character.
His story rings familiar to me; my brother George is a big American football fan and I remember him telling me about this star high school talent, I think it was Banksβ¦ Brian Banks, thatβs it!
Brian was falsely accused of sexual assault and spent over five years in prison for a crime he didnβt commit. When he was acquitted and released, he tried to make a go of it and play professionally, but his prime years had been wasted during his incarceration. This unfortunately is what Clarence is experiencing now.
Thereβs no doubt Clarence can handle himself. I hear Chris Avery is trying his damndest to get him up to scratch in the ring, but itβs too late, those prime years have gone.
Someone like myself; Iβm not even in my prime years yet, I have so much time to develop and grow in this business. Whereas Clarenceβs time has been cruelly stolen away, and no matter how much he tries - time is something you cannot replace.
Clarence achieved what he set out to do when he was freed, gaining his revenge on Darren Marsh by having him rightfully placed where he belonged - behind the bars of a maximum-security prison.
Nowβs the time for Clarence to step away from this sport, with his head held high, knowing he achieved his goal. Perhaps he could become an ambassador for other African-Americans, or of any race, whoβve been wrongfully imprisoned by the police.
This would save me the heartache of inflicting another defeat upon such an incredible human being.
But if Clarence does choose to fight me, I will not hold back, I am determined to turn that one into a two as I aim to achieve my own goals.
Katherineβs voyage into the wrestling business had taken her to a new country. Normally somewhat of a social butterfly back home; she longed to make new friends following her recent relocation, and being more of an outsider was definitely an alien experience for Katherine. The members of the Fight Gym were friendly enough, but they hadnβt made much effort into making her feel welcome in the new city, acting more like colleagues rather than friends.
She had hoped to socialise more with Johnny Bacchus, but he was based out of California; Katherine hadnβt quite understood how big the United States was. And at that very moment, the reigning Hardcore Champion was in Oslo ready for his next title defence at XIII.
Before signing with Action Wrestling; Katherine had also connected with Harvey Marx, but he was missing in action ever since Tokyo Fite.
Sheβd even considered reaching out to Jay Mack, but she didnβt want to gain a negative reputation amongst her colleagues if they deemed her to have an inappropriate relationship with a member of Action Wrestling management
Feeling down, Katherine longed for something from home - a bacon sandwich. Not with American bacon though, with British bacon instead. Following a Twitter exchange with Ross Hanson, she grew hope that she might locate some within the city. A further conversation with Mark Cross helped her locate a butcher shop, and so she set off to North Durango Drive to find her home comfort.
As she walked along the pavement, or sidewalk as it was known there, she went over her match with Diego in her head, self-analysing her victory. She then thought about Clarence Hendricks, trying to remember his losing performance to Roman Gunn, a match she had watched from the back; a habit she had always practised since she began training to better herself. Acting like a sponge for knowledge; Katherine found it effective to learn from both her peerβs successes - and their failures.
After finally reaching the butcherβs, Katherine compartmentalised what sheβd remembered about Clarenceβs performance, ready to put it to use in the gym later that week. Her belly rumbled; her lips moistened as she thought about the bacon, she hoped that Markβs recommendation would come to fruition.
Just as reached out to grasp the door handle, her phone vibrated. She diverted her hand into her hoodie pocket, retrieving the phone and unlocking the screen. She proceeded to read the message she received, a smile formed on her face once more.
