Katherine sat on the mat, cross-legged with her hands rested on her knees. Following recent trips to Tokyo, New York for the Roth Invitational and Winnipeg for Clash; sheβd been kept away from The Tap or Snap Fight Gym - from spending time perfecting her craft on the mat - something she considered sacred.
βLetβs go again, Kat!β her trainer Mick, called out.
Gladly, she thought to herself, inserting her mouthguard once more as she hopped back up to her feet with an enthusiastic bounce. She set her eyes on her latest sparring partner, another hopeful prospect.
βGet into your stances!β commanded Mick.
Katherine defaulted to her classic kickboxing stance - feet shoulder-width apart, right foot slightly behind the left. She assessed her opponentβs stance, she is going to charge at me.
And as Mick waved them to start - her opponent did just that. Katherine pivoted her hips, swinging her right foot around, connecting flush with her opponent's jaw, and they fell to the mat - with a thud.
Katherine ran over to her opponent, and offered them her hand, βI hope you're ok?β
Mick shook his head as he stepped away, βDamn, weβre gonna need to find tougher sparring partnersβ.
A wrestling mat is sacred - one canvas can hold so many memories.
The feel, the smell, even the stains - together they form a tapestry retelling the masterpiece of the warriors of this great sport. Those who have paved the way for the next generation of hopeful superstars with dreams of creating their own masterpieces.
In Seattle; two more hopeful stars get their opportunity on the sacred mat: Diego Tesoro, and myself.
Just to get this chance is a culmination of over twenty years of hard work and sacrifice - not just by myself, but also by my family.
Iβm just a girl from London who comes from a loving home, where our parents put us kids first. Countless hours were spent ferrying me around, from gymnastics practice to kickboxing tournaments and occasionally, to the Accident and Emergency Department - where many stitches were sewn, but it was all worth it.
Why? Because those years of sacrifice have laid down critical foundations: discipline, dedication, drive, determination and a bloody strong work ethic.
When I stand on the ring apron next week and I wipe my feet before stepping onto the sacred mat - Iβll have earned that moment - and Iβll pay homage to those who have paved the way for myself.
Unlike you, I am a fan of wrestling, have been for many years. I used to sit on my fatherβs lap and watch WCF each week. Even now as Iβve entered the sport myself - I cannot get enough of it as itβs so important to me. So just imagine my sheer disgust when I tuned into the AW Network to watch The Search, and I saw you desecrating the sacred mat. Instead of leaving your boots in the middle of the ring like a gracious loser - you spat on the mat and stormed out.
Coming from money, being gifted with your family lineage - youβve been handed opportunities your whole life. I used to find your father, Tesoro, inspiring when I was younger. As a keen gymnast, his high-flying style fascinated me and I one day hoped to emulate him. Itβs a shame his legacy has been tainted by the actions of his son.
If you were as passionate about this business as you claim, you wouldnβt desecrate both the mat and tarnish your familyβs legacy.
You were born into this industry, were privileged with every benefit that came with your birthright. Just to get this opportunity I had to relocate to another continent - leave everyone I love behind. You had such an unbelievable chance to show your talent and worth to this promotion when in truth, you proved to Action Wrestling management and its fans - youβre just a petulant, spoiled brat!
In a tournament designed to help one develop and grow - you failed to even make the top five. And now you dare to show up without signing a contract and proclaim youβre the next World Champion?
Iβve seen the calibre of athletes here who have held that title - Roy Speede, Lockhart, Corey Blackβ¦ youβre not fit enough to lace up their boots.
Success is not guaranteed for anyone - all I have is an opportunity. My sacrifices have allowed me the chance to stand on the sacred mat and show the world Iβm good enough to succeed here. Should all go to plan, Iβll leave with a smile on my face - youβll be left in the corner throwing another tantrum.
During your time on The Search, you spoke of your passion for the business, trying hard to convince us of your talents. Yeah, in many forms of life - money can buy success, but not in this profession. The only thing that brings you success here is hard work, time and patience. Whilst youβre materialistic, playing with your flash new Tesla, Iβll be in the back of an Uber - binge-watching Legacy 10, or reciting the game plan I put together in gym to defeat you.
Iβm so excited for the next chapter of my life - itβs felt like an eternity just to get to this very moment.
But now the hard work on the sacred mat begins - there will be wins and losses - tears of both joy and sadness.
Either way - I will uphold the legacy of the mat. I will remain true to myself whilst maintaining the values taught to me.
Spitting on the mat was a violation of those values, and for that - Iβm going to kick you in the face.
So yes, you best bring someone with you on Monday to the arena to drive your Tesla home after our match, because umm - I fear you wonβt be in a fit state to drive it yourself.
