No Lies Detected
[When Action Wrestling’s lead interviewer Jenna Bauer enters the control room she is befuddled. Her next subject, Minka Starr, is seated on set hooked to a polygraph. She turns to her producer.]
“What’s the deal?”
“Minka wants to prove she isn’t the woman that attacked you when QDT was trying to propose at Clash.”
“I know she wasn’t. Whoever attacked me has been part of Action Wrestling for years. Starr’s been here two weeks.”
“She said the perfume you smelled could be a red herring; which is true when you think about it.”
[Jenna, her conviction challenged- albeit only slightly- decides to humor “The Fancy Footworker”. Donning her Blue and Gold Action Wrestling blazer he enters the studio to be mic’d up. Minka, wearing a Black Watch Tartan dress shirt and tan chinos. watches her with sympathy.]
“Howya doing, kiddo?”
“I’m fine. You know the lie detector is totally unnecessary.”
“But it’s classic wrestling schtick! I’m stoked to have the chance to use it. Besides, I have absolutely nothing to hide.”
[Taking her seat opposite Minka, Jenna does some last minute primping before the cameras roll.]
“This does force me to adjust my questions, given that the machine only recognizes lies on yes or no questions.”
“I understand, but I know you’re up to it, Jenna. You’re a consummate professional.”
[Jenna acknowledges the compliment with a brusque nod, and then gestures to the studio to begin taping.]
“I’m here with CruiserClash’s newest roster member, ‘The Fancy Footworker’ Minka Starr.”
[Minka interjects.]
“At least until Katta Pult signs.”
[Jenna regards the ingenue bemusedly.]
“I mean, it’s said for context’s sake, on account of-”
[She nods down to the pneumographs wrapped snug around her chest.]
“Right. We should address the elephant in the room then. Minka has volunteered to conduct this interview while attached to a lie detector-”
“Yes.”
[Minka checks the polygraph readout to judge its accuracy, and is satisfied. Jenna is anything but. She makes the decision to get through the interview as quickly as possible by breezing through the questions she has for the quirky neophyte.]
“Have you enjoyed your time in Action Wrestling so far?”
“Yes!”
“Are you satisfied with your performance at the February 22nd Clash against Soldato Fortuna and Alex Scott?”
“No. Can I elaborate?”
“Please do.”
“I fought hard as hell to win that match, and it still wasn’t good enough. It’s clear I got a ways to go if I want to be at the same level as a wrestler like Soldato Fortuna, but I’m not going to let that stop me.”
“What about Alex Scott?”
[Minka doesn’t respond, instead waving her hand to Jenna indicating must adjust her manner of questioning to fit the criteria of the
“Uh,um, do you feel Alex Scott isn't on the same level as Soldato Fortuna talent-wise?”
“Yes.”
“Do you feel Alex Scott isn't on the same level as yourself in terms of talent?”
“Uh… kinda?”
[Jenna fixes Starr with a withering stare. In response Minka shrugs apologetically]
“Ok, ok. I deserve that. Ask again. I’ll answer correct this time.”
“Do you feel Alex Scott is on the same level as yourself in terms of talent?”
“No. May I elaborate?”
“Yes!”
“Alex Scott has all the tools to be Cruiserweight Champion. He’s an athletic marvel who knows how to work. And most importantly, the man does not quit. Got to respect him for that. What limits him is what’s up here.”
[She taps her temple.]
“Alex’s been doing the same thing, in ring and out, since he won the Cruiserweight Tag Titles with DJF almost a year ago, believing since it worked back then it’ll work now. That’s classic Cargo Cult thinking, and it’s a detriment to his career. Alex needs to figure out some way to clear the ruts he’s made for himself in his career path, or else he’s going nowhere. Contrast that with me, whose willing to do what it takes to rise up in this company- including slut shame its star reporter on national television!”
[Jenna is aghast.]
“Are you really?”
[Minka smiles and gives the camera a-wink.]
“No.”
