As the scene resumes, the locale has changed- the Gents now no longer stand in a sealed factory room, but instead in a large and rather dingy arcade. The room is filled with all manner of games of every variety, but as the camera approaches one of the two Gents, a casually dressed Teo Blaze, he simply looks up from the screen with a smile.
“Hey there! Andre went to talk to the manager about getting the brand new 2Gents Pinball machine installed. He’s got the mind for business, me? I’m all about kicking ass and chewing gum... I think you know the rest.
Speaking of which...This weekend we are going to hammer the nail into the tag team dreams of our two most persistent annoyances once and for all!
You know, I don’t have anything in particular against Red White and Bruised on paper. Karlie is a cuckoo-bananas egotist whose daddy issues mean that she’s more than willing to sell her soul, among other things, for a bit of fleeting attention. And Nikki? Well, despite Nikki’s best intentions, she’s so high off her own hype that she honestly thinks that she can become a genuine talent overnight.
And Pineprom? Hoo boy. I never thought you could turn getting your ass whipped into a career, but here they are in spite of it all, eh? Nidrah and Vebbins, the inseparable duo, the queens of instagram and twitter alike. Hashtag New Champs, am I right?
Because it’s just that easy, it’s enough to say that you’re going to do it for real this time, that you’re not going to mess it up again.”
Teo turns and looks over at one of the arcade machines, beeping wildly with a demo screen of an eight-bit classic, some kind of Galaga rip-off by the looks of it.
“You ever play arcade games, cameraman? Rhetorical question. Let me tell you for a moment why, in an era where everyone’s cell phone can play every version of Pac-Man ever printed, these cabinets will continue to persist.
Because we all want to see our name on the high score board.
That’s it, it’s that simple. And yet an entire industry has been built around self-delusion. We just gotta put in that quarter, we all honestly believe that if we just get one chance, that we’re going to be able to get our name in that little electric hall of fame. That people will see the initials and remember that RWB or PNP are the best to ever play the game!!
And then we just keep putting in quarters. Intoxicated on our own imaginations, always believing that one more chance will be the one. Just one more...until we end up with nothing more than empty pockets and frustration.”
Teo reaches offscreen and retrieves a medium sized, cloth-wrapped object. The care with which he transported it is clear, as it’s wrapped in a cloth bag to prevent scratches.
“Tell me, Karlie, Nikki, Nidrah and Vebbins...since you seem to think this is all one big game…So much so that you gave each other accidental title shots because you couldn’t act like a pair of adults long enough to have anything resembling an actual match… The Two Gents are going for that high score. We are going to hold these belts as long as we possibly can. We don’t want anyone to be able to think about these titles without remembering the men who made them mean something again.
And you four? You don’t give a damn about any of it!! You don’t care about Cruiserclash, you don’t care about competition. You just imagine how cool it would be to see your name on that high score board!
But this time will be different right? This time you really mean it! This time you’re angry! This time you’re serious!”
Teo smiles, his face reflecting in the tag team championship he holds proudly in his hand.
“That’s how they get ya, you know. Too stubborn or to stupid to know when to walk away.”
With that, Teo turns and walks to meet up with his longtime friend. As he leaves, the camera pans over a flashing screen, flashing a simple message...
