We see a silhouette splitting wood with an axe. He stands outside Devils Gate. The asylum sits on a hill in the middle of a Maine forest. The silhouette places down a new log, hefts the axe, then swings.

There was a time when I absolutely detested manual labor. When I had so many things to do in life, why would I waste my time doing work that could be done by a machine in minutes, with me exerting my effort on something else in the meantime? But, since I’ve donned this mask and taken up my new cause, I’ve found solace in menial tasks. And splitting wood might be my favorite.

There’s something so… empowering about breaking down the world with nothing but your own strength and will power. Then there’s the physical act itself. The swing requires not just power, but a firm stance. Chopping wood isn’t just a feat of might, it’s also one of mental focus and concentration. Lack either, and the consequences are dire.

But if you expected this to be a critique of my opponents, you would not be entirely correct. Yes, this week I yet again stand across from Regan Voorhees. A woman who, despite her claims of violence, lacks a certain carry through. She’s more comfortable wielding a croquet mallet than an axe. Regan certainly has skill, but she lacks a killer instinct. And her idle words threatening a massacre ring hollow after my decisive victory last week. With the addition of Ms. Sarah Pettis, frankly Regan is a footnote this Monday, a fact she’ll likely throw a hissy fit over.

Spayde Martinez, though, is a more puzzling case. Ms. Martinez has proven herself to be physically imposing, cunning, and possessing an incredible drive. She stares down every challenger and looks to systematically dismantle them. I know this first-hand after her attack last week. Spayde has earned her place atop the Cruiserweight mountain, after her outstanding performance in Cruiserhavoc and her slaughtering of Miss Mae. One thing remains to be answered about Spayde: Where does it come from?

This desire to fight, to destroy? Everyone seems to point to me as CruiserClash’s shadowy enigma, but I make my points perfectly candid. Do you fight for money? Glory? Vengeance? Pure unadulterated adrenaline? A man once told me, “It doesn’t matter why you do something, it matters how you do it.” Frankly, I find that idea detestable. Us followers of the Abyss believe that nothing matters but the Abyss, and in doing so embrace the nature of The Abyss. Unfeeling. Unending. Unrelenting. Our cause is at the very center of our beings. Same goes for my partner. Her motive is straightforward, though self-centered. But you Spayde, I’m unable to see anything inside you. I pride myself on being a reaper of sorts, on taking the souls of my opponents. Yet you will be an empty quarry. Beating you will leave me with an empty feeling, that I haven’t given another soul the experience of the Abyss. It will be a new experience. I look forward to it.

VOID slams the axe down, but there is no log there. A smile slowly spreads across his face.
All that work, all that focus, and I’m left with only an axe. Fitting, really. When I win the Cruiserweight Championship, it won’t be about Spayde Martinez, or even Sara Pettis. It will be just me, standing before the gaping maw of the impending rapture. An omen, if you will, of the horrors to come. But that moment will have to wait for now. This is a chance for me and Sara to get a chance to look at what’s inside our opponents. Let’s hope the results are promising.

Dr. Royce watches VOID from one of the asylum’s windows. He writes down in a journal:
Our meeting with Ms. Pettis went well. Not only is our strategy for this week made clear, but VOID has woken up to the dire situation he faces. He is turning inward once again. With any luck, Phase II will soon be initiated. And if not… we have other ways of controlling him.
