A focussed Matthias Mintzel has proven to be a dangerous beast in Action Wrestling time and time again. For Matthias, nothing focuses the mind like an opponent who demands attention and at Turmoil he was entering the ring with 2 of them. He’d asked NATE to leave him alone for a week to concentrate, he hadn’t even seen Traw Ma (much). His brothers in The Lost Breed had been calling him, making sure he was still on the face of earth… they all had their roles to play in the overall picture, but this week was all about Matthias.
We’re in a local gym, Matthias is sweating buckets, a scene you’d scarcely believe you’d ever see when he debuted all those months ago. His bright red face seems to blend into the red vest top he’s wearing, his hair and beard as unkempt as we’ve come to expect from him.
Corey, I like hearing you talk, I find it encouraging to hear your plans to destroy the rest of The Lost Breed.
You’re being stupid. I am the only person who should be in your sights right now.
Your problem isn’t Sanchez, it’s not Nightingale, it’s not Keeton or Downfall either. Your problem is that you’ve got to go into a match with me and I’m unstoppable right now. I’m focused, I think I’ve made that clear already, but are you? You’ve told me your answer to that already… you’re worrying about other people, people who won’t be involved at Turmoil and you’re making an already very dangerous situation potentially deadly for you. Don’t make that mistake, stop talking about The Lost Breed and start talking about Matthias Mintzel.
You think I need them? That’s the beauty of this group. I don’t need them and they don’t need me either. It’s just that I’ve come to realise that friends can make things easier. Maybe you wouldn’t have lost to Carter Shaw when you tried and failed to bother him for a few weeks if you had some friends? Maybe you wouldn’t have lost to Ash Blake and would be TV champion now if you’d had someone in your corner just looking out for you? Maybe trios wouldn’t have been a complete washout for you if you had anyone that wanted to be in your team, rather than being in a “make up the numbers” rag tag bunch?
Maybe look at yourself rather than others? Ask yourself, why are YOU failing? You’re out of your depth, but it’s with me, not with The Lost Breed, the only reason they’re even on your radar is because you put yourself in this situation with your stupidity.
I get it. I was in a slump too, mine lasted weeks rather than months but I fought through it and I have momentum now and I’m locked in. You’re not there yet. As I said before, this is my story, I am the star in my own story, you just play a small part.
Matthias goes back to working out, grabbing a heavy dumbbell from next to the bench that he’s sat on. However, as he does so he appears to have a thought and stops himself whilst laughing.
It did occur to me that when you picked this fight, you had just planned for it to be between you and Frank? I guess you couldn’t have known I’d already decided I was the next Hardcore Champion.
And if there’s one thing we do agree on, it’s that Frank Lowe is a perfect example of a paper champion.
His wall of fame here is beating up an innocent woman, killing a midcarder and then getting gifted the Hardcore Title. I say gifted, he did beat Derrick Vayden, but I think we’ll agree that’s the same thing really, Vayden was literally handed the title when QDT retired, whoever faced him first was taking that, fuck knows what Philidor see in himl. All Frank has managed is a token title defence when the new Following formed which saved his ass for a few weeks... fuck his toughest actual match for the title was against NATE and Frank really did make that look damn tough!
What can I say? I understand why Corey went after him, but he’s not the answer to making the Hardcore Title prestigious again. I mean, what is Frank Lowe? He’s a grumpy bastard. So fucking what? So am I, so are half of the Action Wrestling roster but we work for our opportunities. I had to beat Cormack McNeill three times to be Pure Champion, Lowe’s beaten pity champ Vayden and fucking NATE.
I get why that seemed like an easy route to relevance for you Corey. If it was you one on one with Frank Lowe and I honestly think you might even sneak a rare win. But you didn’t look around, you didn’t see me waiting to pounce and take over the Hardcore Division and now you’re caught in my crossfires.
You’re not the next Hardcore Champion Corey, I am. The Lost Breed aren’t your problem, I am.
Matthias does go back to his workout. He stares at himself in the mirror, the same intense stare that has struck fear into the heart of many people over the years but Matthias sees strength in his eyes this time. He had been in a strange place since losing to Noris Cranley to lose his Pure Title but now he believed he was back, he believed every word he said and he was ready.
Frank’s time is up, that almost goes without saying and you know that part is true too. But it’s not just him that’s going to fade into obscurity after Turmoil, that’s your destination too. You’re not holding that title this time next week, Frank isn’t champion after the three of us clash. I am.
