“Can you not hear it? Do not deny, it speaks to you. Fills your heart, becomes your world, tells you one truth… Winds will change…
“Hush. Listen. Can you hear it?
Winds…
Will…
Change…”
Derrick Vayden sits in a chair, flipping through a photo album, smiling down at the images in front of him.
Celebrating a tag team victory with Magic Maddox. Holding the cruiserweight title high at Evolution. A still of him hitting Daniel Westbrook with a v-trigger. Standing across the ring from Geri Miller. Standing over Alexander Pasternak at Carnage, once again holding the title high. Another shot of him and Geri sharing a ring. Holding two Cruiserweight belts into the air after beating Kyle Cameron. Andre Jenson holding his arm up in victory.
“We’ve sure made a lot of memories this year, haven’t we? Since starting my AW career in May, I’ve spent more than half of that time as a champion. You heard that right, I’ve spent about four months of 2019 with the cruiserweight division on my back. I took the baton from QDT and ran with it. I took this division to new heights, represented it in the All-In ladder match as well as in Wrestler of the Year. This whole Havoc Rumble was made possible because I made people want to see this division shine.
“And now… look what happened. You have everyone 201 pounds and under coming out of the woodworks shooting their shot at the cruiserweight title through this Havoc Rumble match. Action Wrestling alumni making their grand returns, a heavyweight who's still allowed in the match despite admitting he’s WAY over the weight limit, even a former general manager who doesn’t even wrestle!
“That’s my biggest regret this year, letting Raging Dead beat me for the cruiserweight title. His winning the title made it seem possible for any schmo off the street to win the belt. The result? Every schmo off the street enters the match!
“I look at the pool of competitors in this match and I see returning stars trying to reclaim some of their former glory at the young guys' expense. I see competitors from other companies trying to prove their mettle against Action Wrestling’s finest. But most importantly? I see people I’ve already beat!
“Cameron? Beat him. Bolas? Beat him. Geri? Beat her a few times…”
Vayden winks.
“In all seriousness, though. We have some serious new blood in the ol’ CW. It’s been a long time since so much talent has been in the division at one point. It’s so nice to know that my victory will mean that much more when I toss so many talented sumbitches out of my ring. And I’m going to start with easily the most impressive of the new blood, Raging Dead.
“Raging, Mr. Dead, Angy Deadboi, whatever. You’ve proven yourself to be a worthy champion, that your victory over me wasn’t a fluke. And if you didn’t have twenty-nine other people all gunning for you, I’d say you have what it takes to lead the division into the future! But the fact of the matter is you just don’t have the drive to handle everyone.
“One opponent? Sure. Two opponents? You got it! But twenty-nine? I just don’t think you can do it, broseph. Too many moving parts for you, dude.”
Vayden turns to a blank page in his album with a “2020” at the top.
“So, we’re at the end and at the same time, we’re at the beginning of this misadventure. The cruiserweight division is about to enter a whole new era and I personally cannot wait to watch it come together. No matter the outcome of this match, I pray the winner will continue paving the way for this division like QDT and I have done for the past year.”
Vayden grabs a glass of water from the table next to his chair and raises it into the air.
“Here’s to this bright new era for us ‘vanilla midgets’. Let’s steal the show once again, boys and girls. I can’t wait to do battle once more with you.”
Vayden looks down, returning to flipping through the album as the scene fades out.
