Several days have passed since Karlie had completed the national literacy test, and n she is headed to get the results, she is accompanied by her parents, and her stepmom, Nikki, unfortunately, had to travel to Pittsburgh on a personal matter.
They are sitting inside the classroom she had become familiar with recently, as Mrs. Crane walks in holding an envelope.
Mrs. Crane: Well I have the results of your test.
Karlie sits nervously as Mrs. Crane opens the envelope and looked over the results.
Mrs. Crane: According to these results, Karlie, you are now a Literate American.
Karlie: I passed.
Mrs. Crane: Yes you passed, you were right on the borderline, but that doesn’t matter, you passed and I’m sure you're happy about that.
Karlie: I am, it took a lot for me to admit I couldn’t read or write, and it was even harder for me to seek help, but I’m glad I did it, and I’m glad that while I won’t be reading or writing any novels yet, I’m glad I’m no longer illiterate.
Diana: We’re proud of you.
Karlie: Thanks, mom.
Vincent writes some words on a piece of paper and hands it to his daughter.
Vincent: Read this.
Karlie: Wow, dad you're really putting me on the spot.
Karlie looks at the words on the paper.
Karlie: I’m proud that you’re my daughter.
Mrs. Crane: That was really good Karlie.
Tracy: How about we celebrate this over dinner.
Diana: That’s a great idea.
As they stand up to leave, Karlie turns to Mrs. Crane.
Karlie: Want to join us, Mrs. Crane.
Mrs. Crane: No, I'll pass, this is your time to spend with your family.
Diana: We insist.
Mrs. Crane: Okay.
The restaurant was a little packed, but they were able to get a table, as they were eating a little girl and her mom came up to the table.
Mom: We hate to disturb you during your meal, but I had to come over and tell you how much of an inspiration you are to my daughter, she has a reading disability, and your have inspired her to work hard and overcome it, like I know you will overcome your illiteracy.
Karlie smiles at the mom and her little girl.
Karlie: Thank-you.
Mom: I know you can’t give my daughter an autograph, but would it be okay if she took a picture with you.
Karlie: Sure.
Karlie gets up from her chair and kneels next to the little girl, who's smile is a mile wide meeting her idol after the mom takes her picture. Karlie smiles at her.
Karlie asks the little girl what her name is.
Allie.
Karlie: Well Allie I feel I have to give you something you’ll never forget.
Karlie asks her mom for a pen.
Karlie: Do you have something I can write on Allie.
Allie reaches into her pocket and pulls a notepad and hands it to Karlie.
Karlie: Boy, I hope I can do this.
To, Allie don’t let adversity get you down, you have the power to overcome anything you put your mind too.
Your friend, Karlie.
Allie: Look mommy.
Allie’s mom: That’s great now thank Karlie.
Allie: Thank-you Karlie.
Karlie: You're welcome.
Allie and her mom walk off, and Karlie sits back down at the table.
Karlie: Wow, that was a lot.
Mrs. Crane: But you did it.
Karlie: Yes I did.
With their meal concluded, and Vincent covering the bill, they leave the restaurant, outside as they are getting ready to leave Mrs. Crane hands something to Karlie.
Mrs. Crane: Maybe you and I can have dinner sometime.
She enters her car and drives off.
Karlie looks at the paper.
Helen 555-4536.
Karlie puts the paper in her pocket and joins her parents and Tracy they board Karlie’s Bronco and drive off.
A few days later.
Karlie is sitting in a classroom full of elementary kids as a kid come up to her holding a book.
Kid: Will you read us a story.
Karlie looks at the cover of the book and recognizes it well, Dr. Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
Karlie: My grandpa used to read me this story when I was little.
She flips to the first page as the kids all gather around, Karlie takes a deep breath, and speaks to herself here goes nothing.
Karlie: Here we go.
Karlie looks at the words on the page and after studying them read them aloud.
Karlie: Every who down in Whoville loved Christmas a lot, but the Grinch who lived north of Whoville did not.
The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.
Karlie read the entire story it took her longer than most people probably would have, but to her it was a major achievement. After reading the story she sat with the kids for a bit then thanks them for having her, she posed for a picture, then left.
A Few days later and Karlie is in the midst of Christmas shopping and for the first time, she’s actually feeling great, being able to read stuff, she still struggles at times, but hey Rome wasn’t built in a day now was it. Karlie pushes her cart throughout Walmart, filling is with various Christmas gifts and other things, wave to people as she does, a while the store is filled with quite a few attractive mature ladies, Karlie goes about her business and having found everything she was looking for she headed to the checkout, and counts out the amount and gave it to the cashier, who gives her back her change, she left the store.
I never knew what a weird and wacky world we live in.
The camera finds Karlie sitting on a bench reading a newspaper.
Karlie: This might sound cheesy, but reading is really fun, and when you can’t people tend to look down negatively on you. I hid the fact that I was Illiterate, why because when your a prominent world class athlete, people expect you more out of you can normal people. I bet you're wondering how someone like me was able to achieve what I have in life without being able to read or write, the answer is sports, most notably Hockey, when your the star athlete people tend to look the other way, I never had to worry about grades or anything like that all I knew was I seemed to be getting through high school and College based on my abilities on a sheet of ice, and people went out of their way to help me through life, my parents handled all my bills, Tracey handled my contracts and public appearance, all I hand to do was just live my life, but one day something happened that made me want to go public with my Illiteracy, hearing someone being called a dummy because they couldn’t read a sign in the doctor's office, just because someone can’t read or write doesn’t make someone dumb, being ignorant towards someone who can’t read that make you the dumb one, look at what I have accomplished without being able to read or write does that make me a dummy, no it doesn’t, does make me any less a person, no it doesn’t, being illiterate doesn’t limit your abilities to do great things, Charlemagne was illiterate he became Holy Roman Emperor and was later canonized, Genghis Khan was Illiterate and he nearly conquered the world these are just two of the many illiterate people who did great things.
Karlie paused to take a breath.
Karlie: I could give you more but, that’s for another time, time to turn my focus to an important matter, winning the Action Wrestling world title, I know there are people who fell I don’t deserve this opportunity well you can all kiss my ass. Now in order to become the action wrestling world champion I have to beat a blowhard, an alien, and Sidney Warrick.
Karlie takes a sip of her coffee.
Karlie: T.F.K, no one can doubt what you have accomplished in wrestling, it’s been pretty good, and something you achieved on your own, but I guess you feel that in order to win the World title you have to enlist the aid of Frosty the snowman or John Frost if you will, but can you truly trust that big dope, I mean come on when the tough gets going, he’ll melt like a snowman in spring, neither Frosty or you are going to stand in my way to becoming Action Wrestling World Champion, this is my time Thaddeus.
L, I really don’t know why you're even in this match, to be honest maybe Camila thinks you can succeed where she constantly failed, yeah you’ve been more successful than me here in Action, but then again the referee’s haven’t been screwing you over, they robbed me time and time again, yet you just get handed a spot and that makes me sick, L, I once respected you, but now your nothing but a stepping stone, at Clash I guess we’ll see how fast alien technology can cure an upper-body injury, probably won’t be fast enough for you to stop me from winning the World title, sorry but that title isn’t going to Mars or Pluto or whatever planet your from, it going back to Minnesota with me.
Sidney, being a gay woman I respect your campaign to eliminate all racial prejudice, even if people think your not sincere, whether you are or your not means nothing to me when the bell ring for the main event at Clash, you have what I want, and I intend to get it, Sidney, by whatever means I have too, that includes going through Thaddeus Franklin King, L Verez and finally you, and holding the world title high above my head in Los Angeles, and hearing my name announced as the new Action Wrestling world champion, because winning in the clutch is something I do very well and ain’t no one can dispute that Sidney no one, now if you will excuse me I have to catch up on world events.
Karlie starts reading the newspaper as the screen fades
They are sitting inside the classroom she had become familiar with recently, as Mrs. Crane walks in holding an envelope.
