Trials of Despair
Gerard Angelo vs. Sam Kidsgrove
Adilene Floyd: The following is scheduled for ONE FALL! Introducing first...The lights go out in the arena and the sound of a synth starts playing.
“I CAN’T STOP!”
The lights start to flash as “STOP” repeats over and over from different speakers in the arena as the beat starts to build and then it drops.
BOOM
A small explosion of gold fireworks goes off
“I CAN’T STOP!”
The lights come back on as Kanye West’s voice serenades the people as they give loud boos (Accompanied by a small smattering of cheers) as Gerard Angelo is shown standing on stage, back to the crowd, the hood of his hoodie pulled up, right arm raised above his head at an angle, one finger extended. He throws his hood back with the same hand and spins around to the crowd, arms extended, like he’s absorbing another wave of booing, a cocky smirk etched across his face as he surveys the crowd behind his trademark sunglasses. He makes his way down to the ring slowly, brushing off fans and taunting them.
Adilene Floyd: From Hollywood, California, weighing in at 225 lbs, "The Living Legend", GERRRRRARD ANGELOOOOOOOOO!He stops at the ring stairs and slaps the top step before climbing them, and walking to the center of the ring apron. Angelo surveys the AW Arena once more, before slipping through the middle and top rope into the ring. He walks to the opposite ring post, leaping up onto the second turnbuckle. Gerry points to the crowd before unzipping his hoodie, which gets more than a few ladies in the audience to scream out, before pulling it off and pretending to toss it to the fans, before just dropping it on the floor with a smirk. "The Hollywood Hero" hops down and removes his trademark sunglasses, placing them in the corner neatly before leaning back against the turnbuckles, still mouthing off to the fans as he starts to stretch.
Chris Avery: The Trials of Despair tournament rolls on tonight, as we get the in-ring debut of one of the most intriguing new prospects of the year... someone who burst onto the scene last week with a lot of flashy promises.Billy: At first I thought he was James Raven's slightly less good looking brother! But it's not! I remember his movies and or television shows!Chris Avery: For those who aren't aware of Angelo's CV, this is a highly accomplished competitor and former World champion of other promotions, and in his first match here he's ready to move a step closer to holding gold!Adilene Floyd: And his opponent, weighing in at 210 lbs... accompanied by Zooey. Also from Los Angeles, California... SAM KIDSGROVE!!As the opening riff to “Unity” by Shinedown echoes around the arena. Strobe lights pulse along with the beat. As soon as the drums begin, fire shoots up from the sides of the stage in time with them.
Zooey Deschanel, wearing a cute dress and looking like sunshine walks out first, she looks out at all sections of the crowd and nods in time with the music, her face beaming with positive energy. Kidsgrove joins her and puts his arm over her shoulder, bringing her in for a tender kiss. They then start to walk down the ramp, speaking to people in the front row, signing autographs, taking selfies, kissing babies, hi fiving and generally making sure that everyone can get a memento of meeting them. This takes a while.
Eventually they make it to the ring area. Kidsgrove jumps to the apron first and lowers the rope for Zooey to get into the ring. When she does, they both immediately go to opposite corners and stand in the middle turnbuckle, posing for the crowd. Kidsgrove doing the “Hey, I know you” or the “Double guns” where Zooey is blowing kisses and waving at people who have their signs or look friendly. They do this again on other turnbuckles and high five each other when they go past.
Deschanel then exits the ring after Kidsgrove again holds the rope for her and proceeds to take selfies and high five people at ringside as Kidsgrove smiles at her, then winks and gets ready for action.
Chris Avery: Sam Kidsgrove has had a turbulent time lately, he lost out on the WOTY tournament, his partnership with Kat Hastings ended abruptly and he doesn't seem to be focusing on the Tag titles... a win tonight might put him back on the right path! The camera bulbs are flashing wildly as the two evenly matched Hollywood staples stand in the center ring, Angelo smiling arrogantly and holding his arms up. Kidsgrove looks from Zooey, to Angelo, and shakes his head with a tinge of disgust.
Billy: “Everyone carries a shadow-self, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.” – Carl JungChris Avery: Billy...... fucking... WHAT.Billy: They're twins and junk like that!!As the bell rings, Kidsgrove tensely holds his arms out to tie up. The two clash together like bulls, trying to jockey for positioning, before they shove off each other with a stalemate. The two circle each other once more before locking up center ring, where they once again try to push each other down to the mat, before it's Gerard who latches on to a side head lock before taking Kidsgrove over to the mat forcing his shoulder down. The referee sidles into position to count it, however, Kidsgrove rolls his shoulder up off the mat, waving his finger no. Angelo continues to crank down on his head. The referee asks Kidsgrove to surrender which he refuses before working his way back to his feet where he hoists Angelo up in the air before driving him into the mat with a side suplex. Kidsgrove works his way back to his feet before picking Angelo up off the mat, where he nails him with a hard right hand that sends Angelo back into the ropes. Kidsgrove comes forward, lacing Angelo across the chest with a knife edge chop, followed by a second, before firing Angelo across the ring and into the ropes. Angelo bounces off the ropes ducking, under a Kidsgrove clothesline. Kidsgrove spins around where he peppered in the jaw by several right hands from Angelo before Gerard delivers a T-Bone suplex to a pop from the crowd! Angelo is quickly into the cover hooking the near leg.
The referee: One... Kickout.
Kidsgrove throws a shoulder up off the mat. Angelo works his way back to his feet, picking Kidsgrove up off the mat. Angelo nails Kidsgrove with another right hand, before taking Kidsgrove back into a neutral corner. Angelo begins to drive several shoulder blocks to the midsection, then he whips Kidsgrove across the ring and into the opposite set of buckles. Angelo charges across the ring where he eats a reverse elbow from Kidsgrove. Angelo staggers back out towards the center of the ring for Kidsgrove to deliver a spinning wheel kick from the corner!
Chris Avery: What a lick from Kidsgrove!Kidsgrove takes a moment to stop the fast pace and pirhouette around the ring, making "C'mon" motions with his hands and telling all of his fans to get their cameras out. Zooey smiles and wishes some encouragement to her partner, and Kidsgrove looks down at her, blowing her a kiss. Taking the time to reassure Zooey gives Angelo a second to start pulling himself up, on all fours.
Chris Avery: Kidsgrove may not want to take too long to be distracted.Billy: How could you not fall into those dreamy, crystal blue eyes? Sigh...Angelo takes a moment to come out of the corner, and when he does, Kidsgrove immediately tries to shove him back -- only to be kicked swiftly in the gut for good measure. Gerard follows up with another snapping kick and quickly hits the ropes, but Kidsgrove slips under a wild clothesline attempt, grabs a rear waistlock and drags Angelo to the mat, transitioning into a grounded hammerlock. Angelo manages to wriggle free, only to get doubled over by a knee to the midsection from Kidsgrove ... who quickly hits the ropes and comes off with a seated dropkick that sends both of Kidsgrove' boots colliding with the side of Angelo's skull. Kidsgrove with the cover, hooks the leg...

Two... Kickout.
Chris Avery: Not putting away Angelo anyway near that early, but it's hard to blame Kidsgrove for taking the initiative.Billy: I'll blame him. I'll blame whomever I want to blame, dagnabbit.Chris Avery: My partner, ladies and gentlemen, resorting to the language of 19th century prospectors.Billy: That's MAH GOLD! MINE!Chris Avery: It's a good thing I'm getting paid for this.Billy: They're PAYING you?! I'm literally getting punch cards for Jimmy Johns sandwiches.Angelo takes a second too long to get back to his feet, allowing Kidsgrove to grab a side headlock. Angelo slips behind and shoves Kidsgrove away, but whiffs on a roundhouse kick attempt and gets met with a pair of Kidsgrove jabs that back the Hollywood Hero against the ropes. Kids sends Angelo off the ropes, catching him with a huge back body drop that causes Angelo to bounce off the mat, contorting and holding his back with a stretched expression of pain, before finally rolling to a stop. Kidsgrove covers, with Zooey urging for the ref to come on.

Chris Avery: It's sometimes easy to forget that Kidsgrove is a multiple time champion here in AW, and he knows how to get business done. Angelo is going to be successful he's going to have to start rallying with some offense.Kidsgrove reaches down, picking Angelo up off the mat, before taking him back into a neutral corner. Kidsgrove chops Angelo across the chest before hoisting him up to the top turnbuckle. Kidsgrove steps up to the middle turnbuckle before locking a front face lock. The crowd comes alive as Kidsgrove steps up to the top turnbuckle! The crowd begins to boo slightly as Angelo begins hammering Kidsgrove in the ribs with right hands before freeing himself from Kidsgrove where he able to shove Kidsgrove off the top rope and sending him crashing to the mat below! Gerard stands up on the top turnbuckle before leaping off with a flying elbow drop across the sternum of Kidsgrove. Kidsgrove contorts around the ring, holding his sternum, and Gerard Anglo sits up. You would think after all that, Gerard Angelo would be satisfied enough to go for a pin, but the flashy, show-offy movie star starts posing to the crowd, saying that it's his time, and he's going to show Action Wrestling some real action. As he continues to taunt, Kidsgrove rises to his feet, Angelo meets him with a knee to the ribs that gives him the opening to lock in a Muay Thai clinch and start bringing on the knees with a vengeance. Kidsgrove absorbs nearly a dozen blows to the head and body before he finally shoves Angelo away and backs into the corner for a rest. Angelo doesn't give him one, charging into the corner and leaping for a flying knee. Somehow, Kidsgrove catches him and sets up for a powerbomb out of the corner, but Angelo's one step ahead once again, sending Kidsgrove to the canvas with a hurricarana.
Chris Avery: I am very impressed with the conditioning of Gerard Angelo in this match!Billy: You could have a body like that!... If you paid a half dozen trainers a small fortune to work those spare tires from your gut and glutes.Chris Avery: ...Hey! .......bitch. *sniff*Billy: It takes a village to look like he does, is all I'm saying!Kidsgrove manages to get back to his feet, but is quickly met by a pair of jarring kicks from Angelo; one to the ribs, and a crackling blow to the outside of Kidsgrove's right thigh. Hobbled, Kidsgrove is easily whipped into the ropes, where Angelo sprints in and connects with a dropsault to the chest. As Kidsgrove staggers out, Angelo swoops in with a quick DDT, then rapidly follows with a standing backflip that sees the Hollywood hero land with both of his knees crashing into Kidsgrove' back in a lungblower. It's only a quick transition from there to a cover. The crowd is rapidly coming alive for the fast-paced match.

Frustrated, Gerard starts working his way back to his feet. He backs up against the ropes, waiting for Kidsgrove, who starts pushing himself up off the mat and to a vertical base where he turns around and walks into a boot to the ribs by Angelo which doubles Kidsgrove over for Angelo to follow up with a piledriver! Angelo rolls out to the ring apron before pulling himself to his feet where he scales the nearest turnbuckle. Angelo waits for Kidsgrove who once again starts working his way back to his feet. Once he's standing Angelo leaps off the top rope looking for a flying cross body block. Kidsgrove side steps Angelo causing him to crash and burn to the mat. Chris Avery: What impact!Kidsgrove makes his way towards the ropes where he steps out to the ring apron before scaling the nearest set of buckles himself! The crowd starts to buzz as Angelo now begins working his way back to a vertical base. Once standing he's met by a missile dropkick by Kidsgrove! Kidsgrove makes the cover hooking the nearest leg!

Kidsgrove waits for Angelo to get slowly to his feet. With Angelo struggling to draw in a breath and recover, Kidsgrove hits the ropes and comes off, looking for a clothesline, but Angelo similarly charges forward and meets Kidsgrove, and the knock into each other with a double clothesline!! Zooey's hands fly to her face, as that was honestly a hell of a spill. The referee's eyes open up as well, and he leans in to both men, who are laying side by side and groaning, asking them bro you good, or.
Chris Avery: Perfectly mirrored action, from two men with incredible physical similarities to each other!Billy: Jesus fuckin christ, I'm gonna have to pop the MCU nerds and say it's like Kidsgrove is fighting a Variant of himself!Kidsgrove, eyes glazed, blinks and rolls to his side, and Angelo can be seen groaning and holding his jaw. The referee, seeing he doesn't have to count them out, rules the match can continue as they slowly start pulling themselves to their feet. Angelo and Kidsgrove rise at the same moment, but Kids beats Angelo to the punch, boots Angelo in the gut and drops down with a wicked looking DDT that leaves Angelo nearly vertically driven into the mat. Angelo flops over. Kidsgrove blows the hair out of his face and looks over at Zooey. lifts Angelo up and gives him a harsh backbreaker, then stretches him across his knee. He shouts for Angelo to give up.
Chris Avery: Kidsgrove has shown Angelo the proverbial lack of quarter here.Billy: I never got that expression. So he doesn't have any quarters? How does he get through tolls?Chris Avery: He - ...You know, never mind. The referee asks over and over again if Angelo will give up, but he refuses. Kidsgrove stretches Angelo further until his spine looks like it’s beginning to curve. Angelo is contorting and throwing his arms around. Kidsgrove finally settles for shoving Angelo to the mat. When Angelo gets up, he avoids a clothesline, and Kidsgrove turns around into a snap superkick. Angelo whips Kidsgrove into the corner and follows it up with a running enziguri in the corner. Angelo picks Kidsgrove back up, and shoves him back into the corner. Seeking to capitalize on his new-found momentum, Angelo whips Kidsgrove into the opposite corner and follows in with a second running enziguri. Kidsgrove wobbles out of the corner, as Angelo springs off the ropes and hits a diving cutter!
Chris Avery: And he calls that Director's Cut! Kidsgrove is down and out!Billy: Now Angelo grabbing Kidsgrove's arms ... could be trying to turn him into a cross armbreaker submission, but Kidsgrove is fighting!Chris Avery: Well, of course. Just letting him do it would be massively stupid ... not to mention painful.Kidsgrove pivots his hips over and over again, finally managing to shake Angelo' grip and send the Hollywood Hero tumbling away. Both men quickly regain their feet, but it's Angelo who gains the advantage, cutting off Kidsgrove's attempted forearm with a knee to the stomach, then flipping overhead with a gutwrench suplex! Kidsgrove manages to get back to his feet quickly, but Angelo is right there waiting for him and hooks Kidsgrove from behind before sending Kidsgrove crashing to the mat with a half-nelson suplex.
Chris Avery: Kidsgrove has absorbed some punishment in the last few minutes, and yet he continues to gasp for life.Angelo now takes his time, pacing around the ring, holding his arms up arrogantly and the crowd, just getting used to his vibe, is starting to realize oh, hey, fuck this guy, so they boo. Angelo laughs them off and turns back to Kidsgrove, but Kidsgrove turns him around with a backfist. Kidsgrove doesn't waste any time as he picks Angelo up off the mat before taking him back into the ropes. Kidsgrove delivers a chop across the chest before shooting Gerard across the ring, Angelo bounces off the ropes and into the arms of a sleeper hold by Kidsgrove! Angelo's eyes bug out of his head, and for a moment, his arms thrash wildly, as Kidsgrove tries to get the hold locked in. But, Angelo is just a little bit bigger and stronger, so he is able to run Kidsgrove backwards, squashing him in the corner, making Kidsgrove release the hold. Angelo gasps a bit, trying to get some air back in his lungs, but Kidsgrove is also some the worse for the wear. Angelo turns, and he goes to boot Kidsgrove in the gut and turn him around, hooking him for a stunner, but the incoming foot in caught and sadly, Angelo is turned around and discombobulated. When he completes the turn Kidsgrove is ready with a boot to the gut of his own, and he grabs in an arm wrench and a hook kick, taking Angelo down. Then, Kidsgrove decides to snatch in a deep sleeper hold on the fallen Angelo, grinding his forearm in back and forth as he takes Angelo to the mat. Kidsgrove cranks on the pressure of the sleeper as the referee is in position asking Angelo to surrender. Angelo waves off the official as Kidsgrove cranks on the sleeper. Angelo starting to fade! Gerard drops to one knee as the referee once again asks him to surrender. Angelo refuses before falling to a seated position. Kidsgrove continues to crank on the sleeper as the official once again asks Angelo to surrender, he doesn't get a response so he raises Angelo's right arm up in the air, he releases the arm and it falls to the mat.
Chris Avery: Kidsgrove is doing everything he can to grind Angelo down! The referee raises the right up in the air a second time before releasing, it falls back to the mat a second time. The referee raises Angelo's arm up in the air for the third and final time, he releases and it begins to fall towards the mat before being shot right back up into the air garnering a loud ovation from the crowd! Kidsgrove's head whips back and forth as his prey is starting to, for lack of a better word, Hulk up beneath him, vibrating with effort, face turning read. The (largely self-proclaimed) Hollywood Hero fights his way from all fours to his knees, then one knee, then his feet. He laces in a rough elbow to the gut of Kidsgrove, then another, then another... Kidsgrove's grip loosens with each hit. Angelo takes a gasping lungful of air and tries to create separation for the two of them, but Kidsgrove floats in, trying to snatch on a front facelock. Before he can twist it into a cutter, Angelo shoves Kidsgrove off. Kidsgrove bounces off the ropes, and he meets Angelo, who still recovering ducks a Kidsgrove clothesline, letting Kidsgrove surge past him, run to the opposite ropes, and on the return Kidsgrove ducks under a superkick attempt from Angelo! Angelo turns in a circle and Kidsgrove feeds him in to the turnbuckles so that Angelo goes crashing, shoulder first into the ringpost!
Chris Avery: Stunt Double!!Kidsgrove pulls a gasping Angelo out of the corner, and disdainfully goes to throw him over the ropes to the outside. However, Angelo held on to the middle rope and pulls himself back to his feet on the apron, and Kidsgrove turns, a moment of dumbfounded surprise on his face as he sees that devil still on the apron. He charges in, but is met right at the ropes with a roaring elbow strike that makes Kidsgrove do a few two dazed two-steps, then fall right on his back!
Chris Avery: What a damn hit!!Billy: Modified Hero's Welcome!!Performing a slingshot into a senton across the ribs of his foe, Angelo takes a few moments to take in a few deep breaths, gathering his wind. Then he rolls back over, pinning Kidsgrove.

Angelo can't believe it. He yells "COME ON!" to the ref, and the crowd reacts a bit more negatively to his hotheadedness. Angelo grits his teeth, and works his way back to his feet where he stalks for a moment, then picks Kidsgrove up off the mat before taking him back into the ropes. He shoots him across the ring with a whip, Kidsgrove bounces off the ropes, Angelo drops his head looking for a back body drop only for Kidsgrove to stop, grip the ducked head of Angelo, and then drop down for a DDT. Kidsgrove lifts Angelo back up, whips him into the corner, and follows in with a Helluva Kick! Angelo, dazed, stumbles out of the corner, before creaking forward and crashing down like a tree. The crowd now erupts for Kidsgrove as he turns the tide.
Chris Avery: TAKE 2!!The ref drops down, counting the hooked leg.
The referee and the crowd: One...

Three - Kickout!!
The crowd goes up, the people can't believe it. Kidsgrove can't believe it. The referee even looks like he can't believe it. Looking more like he can hold some belief is Gerard Angelo, who is slithering out of the ring to regain some composure, almost slinking out of there like a sentient puddle to gather again at the bottom of the apron. Kidsgrove follows, which proves to be a mistake, because with easy access to his legs, Angelo reaches under the ropes and pulls the big man’s feet out from under him. With surprising strength, Angelo drags him out of the ring and lets Kidsgrove fall to the padded arena floor. Immediately, he starts dropping the knees. He starts with a couple to the upper body and gradually works his way doing, driving knee and knee violently into Kidsgrove. Gerard Angelo’s made a living out of taking down those unsuspecting marks being opportunistically vicious. And no one’s ever accused Angelo of playing by the rules either, so it’s no surprise when he picks up Kidsgrove’s legs and delivers a stomping heel to the groin.
Chris Avery: That’s blatantly illegal! The referee, having somehow missed the stomp, just yells in frustration for the combatants to get back in the ring. Kidsgrove is outside, writhing in pain, as the referee starts his count, but, milking it for all he's worth, Angelo smiles broadly and rolls into the ring and raises his hand for the crowd, who shower him with boos. At length, as the referee is getting to the over five portions of his count, Kidsgrove is up, glaring into the ring at Angelo, but taking his time to recover before getting back in. Kidsgrove grabs the ropes and starts pulling himself up onto the apron, when suddenly, he’s drilled in the chest by Angelo’s baseball slide, knocking him all the way back to the barricade. With Angelo outside of the ring again, the count starts fresh.

Angelo pulls Kidsgrove to his feet and leads him along the side of the ring to the announce table. He turns him around and then sets his large opponent up for a suplex - he even gets him part of the way up, but then Kidsgrove hooks his leg around the back of Angelo’s thigh, forcing him to abort the maneuver. As soon as Kidsgrove feet touch the floor, he immediately reverses and hoists Angelo up into a suplex of his own, dropping him across the ring steps!

Angelo spasms on the arena floor, cramped rod-straight from the pain shooting from his back through his entire body.

Kidsgrove rolls into the ring, but only long enough to break the count, and he’s immediately back outside again to inflict more damage. The announce table is still undamaged, right? Well, not for long. Kidsgrove pulls Angelo up, kicks him in the stomach to double him over, and in an instant, he has Angelo hoisted up for a powerbomb - but perhaps he is too eager to break Angelo’s back. He takes a few steps back to get some extra momentum, but when he goes forward, he’s abruptly halted when Angelo reaches out and grabs the ring ropes.

Kidsgrove tries to pull through and powerbomb him anyway, but in time, Angelo wiggles out and pulls himself onto the apron. When Kidsgrove turns around, Angelo leaps without warning into a sloppy make-shift springboard plancha off the ring apron! For almost a nanosecond Kidsgrove's reflexes are up to the task, He catches Angelo in mid-air ,but then he sways back and the two go plowing over the top of the announcers table, tumbling down together!!
THE TABLE DOESN'T BREAK!
This makes the spot look even more stiff and dangerously unsafe.
Billy: Get the hell out of the way Avery !Both men are laying there, stunned for several long seconds.
Chris Avery: That looked NASTY. What amazes me, as these two men struggle to crawl out from under us, is that even through that pressure the table did not break.Billy (James Hetfield voice): I AM THE TABLE! I AM - immediately shot in the head by a sniper. The sight of both men's collision and flipping over the table was enough to shock the referee into holding up the count, but after a pregnant moment where neither man moves, he looks to the timekeepers and officials for guidance what to do... then continues the count!
FIVE...
SIX...
SEVEN... Both men are crawling in the aisle, a foot away from the apron, on their hands and knees, gasping and winded.
EIGHT... Both men grasp the apron, using it as a means to hold themselves up when their legs can't.
NINE... There's a sense of panic going up from both men as they realize how close they are to being counted out.
Both men rush into the ring just before the count of ten, rolling under the rope at the same time!
The crowd pops!
Billy: This is insane! Back and forth! Neither man giving up!Angelo gets to his feet and kicks at Kidsgrove in the stomach! Kidsgrove kicks Angelo back!
Angelo hits a forearm!
Kidsgrove stumbles back and comes back with a forearm of his own!
Billy: Still going back and forth!Angelo and Kidsgrove meet in the middle of the ring and tie back up..
DING DING DING
Billy: WHAT?!Chris Avery: The bell just rang, what just happened!?Adilene Floyd: This match has been decided in a TIME.. LIMIT.. DRAW!!The crowd boos the decision as Angelo and Kidsgrove are in separate corners sitting down. They both are staring at each other..
Billy: I can't believe it! This match just went to a draw! Well, what happens now?!Chris Avery: We saw Frum win earlier but he has a busted knee and this match just went to a draw!Billy: We have to cut to a commercial! What happens in the Trials of Despair! We fade to a commercial.
