It’s been so long, too long honestly...since I’ve had a chance to just go out there and wrestle. You know, you get caught up in a hunt or a mission to take down or oppose something and it’s like that’s all you think about. You eat, sleep, and breathe that singular thing and while it may seem second nature to go out there and fight the good fight, it does eventually end up taking a toll on you whether you like it or not. That’s been my story for months now, just Philidor battle after Philidor battle and when you go to war against an entire group of people like that, you lose sight of what it is that brought you to the dance in the first place.
I can’t lie. I’ve missed the sport. I’ve missed wrestling because it’s the thing that I fell in love with and while I spent my time feeling like I was fighting for the sport’s survival, I was allowing Spencer Adams to die. No, it wasn’t via shortcomings in those efforts. The issue was that I knew that when I set out to takedown Philidor, I put the fun of it all behind me and while I’d do it all over again if I needed to, I can’t ignore the fact that I was missing an important part of who I am as a competitor in all of that. It’s been Shaw, Lissie and then Shaw and Lissie again. Then I follow that up with having to shut up a guy who wouldn’t know respect for the sport if it bit him. After a while, you really start to feel starved and ready to beg for a crumb of the good shit on hands and knees if you have to.
In a way, I think I envy you the most out of anybody here, Kat. Not only are you out here able to compete purely based on your passion to do so, but you find yourself fortunate enough to enjoy the opportunities that people from my own era didn’t always have coming their way. Coming up in the WCF landscape, I watched people scratch and claw just to be considered as potential canon fodder for the weekly tag team clusterfucks that made up ninety nine percent of the company’s weekly main events.
Back then, people were held back by those at the top because those at the top didn’t give a fuck. Names like Scarecrow, Michael X, Teo Del Sol, Howard Black among so many others. No love, no appreciation..just wrestling purgatory for people who wanted to be bigger and better and move things forward. Why? Because Jay Price drunk off his ass or some stupid fucking Logan versus Torture feud from twenty years ago were seen as the top priority. They looked at that as the shit that was going to put butts in seats and now, to NOBODY’S surprise, WCF doesn’t have the seats at all.
So..if people want to criticize my involvement in this match, then I’m okay with that. I’m okay with it, because I know a world where this type of matchup would be way too fucking uncommon. I remember training my ass off for a match against Joey Flash while Joey Flash was busy in the back getting a shoulder massage and a pep talk whispered into his ear by Seth Lerch. You’re here asking for a match against an established name and that’s what you’re getting. There’s no catch, no snarky plotting on how to haze or embarrass you. You deserve better than that.
You deserve one hundred and ten percent of me in this match, because you should be rewarded for your drive and the way that you’ve continued to approach this sport. Why should you wait for another day if you’re telling the world that you want to take that next step right now? Why should you have to run the same motions that those other names I mention had to when they were given a ceiling that wasn’t supposed to surpass US title Hell? I came here and did everything I could to build this company up so that you and people like you would never know what that feels like.
When people ask why I wanted you for a FightSmart endorsement deal, all they have to do is look at the character of the woman standing across from me this week. You are as pure as they come with a good head on your shoulders. I look at you now and see 2015 Spencer Adams and that excites me. Sure, you were the one who called me out, but I’d argue I needed this just as much. Surprisingly, it’s not even about the title hanging over your shoulder. It’s about knowing what it’s like to see young talent thriving and having the honor and the privilege of being part of that.
Honestly, you don’t have to prove yourself to me or anyone else. Knowing that you feel you have to and watching you carry that chip on your shoulder is enough for me. I’m a believer in Kat Hastings and know that your rise isn’t even a matter of when, because I’m watching it happen already. For me, this is about helping you grow to the best of my ability. Whether I beat you or you “shock the world” like CJ did, I’m going to serve as fuel for that rise. I have no witty punchline for you here, Kat. There’s no screwface closer. Just do me a favor and show me everything I’ve already seen.
